. 3 Claims. CI. 98-98) This invention pertains to new and useful improvements in window ventilators. It is particularly concerned with a novel combined deflector and screen ventilator that is readily attachable to the outside of a window and which is useful in providing screened ventilation protected from elements of the weather.
A further object of this invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means of window ventilation with protection against the entrance of wind, dust, rain and other elements of the weather.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combined screen ventilator and deflector for a window opening, which is particularly suited for top ventilation of the window.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a combined ventilator and deflector incorporatiing a variable positionable screen which may be positioned opposite a window opening in vertical parallel relation thereto, or may be positioned horizontally and at right angles to the window opening, as desired.
The invention is of decided advantage in ventilating and screening a small opening at the top of a window, such an opening as one might desire for sleeping or limited ventilation. In this use of the invention the deflector blocks the entrance of wind, rain, dust, sun, and other elements.
The invention further lies in the novel arrangement of its various elements as well as in their cooperative association with one another to provide the objects intended.
The foregoing objects and advantages of the invention as well as others will appear more fully hereinafter from a consideration of the detailed description which follows, taken together with the accompanying drawings wherein an embodiment of the invention is illustrated. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for purposes of illustration and description and are not to be construed as defining the limits of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevational view of a combined deflector and screen ventilator embodying the invention, wherein the screen member thereof is shown in vertical position;
Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 1, but showing the screen mem ber in its horizontal position; and
Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4.
In describing the invention in detail reference is directed to the drawings, wherein there is shown a deflector element 1, combined with a screen member 2 and adapted for attachment to the outside of a window frame 3 across an opening at the upper portion of a window.
The deflector member 1 is formed from a single blank of light weight sheet metal. The blank is bent or formed to provide a pair of right angular end pieces 5, one in opposed spaced relation to the other, and a broad rectangular back section 6 which bridges the hypotenuse of one end piece with that of the other. The horizontal side of each end piece bends inwardly at right angles to provide a pair of opposed horizontally disposed flanges 8.
The upper free longitudinal edge of the back section 6 extends upwards and away from the latter in a vertical plane in continuation of the vertical plane of the flanges 7 so as to provide a narrow lip or strap 9. The latter provides a means for fastening the deflector member to the window frame, and to this end it includes a plurality of apertures 10 whereby the strap portion may be secured by fasteners 11 across the face of the top rail 12 of the window frame.
When the strap is so fastened, the vertical flanges 7 abut flush against the faces of the upright stiles of the window frame.
Either the pair of flanges 7 of the flanges 8 may be employed as shoulders to accommodate the screen member 2, accordingly as to whether it is desired that the screen member be positioned in a vertical position in close proximity to the opening of the window as in Fig. 2, or in a horizontal position at right angles to the window opening as in Fig. 5. Whether the screen be located on the vertical or the horizontal flanges, it extends substantially from the inner face of the back section 6 to the opposing flanges, and there is suificient play provided to permit it to be turned from one position to the other.
In Fig. 2 the screen member is shown supported in a vertical position by suitable fasteners, such as screws 13. The latter, one or more if desired, extend through each side rail 14 of the frame of the screen member and also through the flanges 7. The screws are embedded fast into the upright rails of the window frame, whereby this arrangement the screen member is held fast to the flanges and the latter are held flush against the outer faces of the upright rails of the window frame.
In Fig. 4 and 5 the screen member is shown supported on the horizontally disposed shoulders 8 where it is held fast by suitable fastening means, such as the bolt 15 threaded into the shoulders 8. In this case the vertical flanges 7 are secured flush to the faces of the upright rails of the frame by screws 13.
Whether the screen member be in a vertical or in a horizontal position, it is clear that screened ventilation protected by the deflector from the elements of the weather will be provided to the open top portion of a window.
The screen member is preferably fastened to the flange members by readily removable fasteners, so that when desired the screen may be readily removed for cleaning purposes or from one position to the other.
It is to be noted in Fig. 2 that the back section 6 is offset longitudinally of its lower edge to provide a lip or strap 18 similar to lip 9 but disposed in a horizontal plane. By this arrangement it is clear that the screen member may, if desired, be aflixed permanently to a pair of shoulders 7 or 8, and the vertical or horizontal position of the screen member relative to the window opening may be obtained by simply reversing the deflector. The strap 18 is also provided with a plurality of apertures 16 whereby it may be fastened, instead of strap 9, to the top rail of the window frame.
While I have described and illustrated a preferred form of the invention, it is clear that some modifications of form might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, it is myintent, therefore, to claim the invention not only in the form presented, but also in all such forms as may be reasonably construed to be within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination of a deflector having an elongated rectangular panel, a pair of identical end panels offset formed alongthe ed e of each "at mesaia'ad tacemsides of the end panels, the snoulder's'ef c or-respefieing sides of the end panels being co lanar: and apposee, the defic'tor being adapted to be pesitioned transversely at a Window opening anda selected- Queer the pairs" of the coplanar shoulders adapted to be affixed to the stilesof the window frame, and 'a rectangular screen m'c'mb'er adapted to be bodily placed a ainst a selected-pair of the coplanar" shoulders so as to arevide sereenedvenmation to thewindow opening.

The eembinatienas in-claim '1, wherein a lip is formed longitudinally of each of the longitudinal edges vof the rectangular panel and each lip extends away from the latter panel in a plane at right angles to the other, a selected one of the lips adapted to be afiixed to the top rail of the window frame.
3. The combination as in claim 2, wherein the deflector is formed of a single blank of sheet material.
