UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER M. KLING, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STREET-CAR-WINDOW SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,647, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed February 12, 1889. Serial No. 299,667. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, PETER M. KLING, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Street-Car-Window Sashes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure I is an elevation illustrative of my improvement. Fig. II is a transverse section.
taken on the line II II, Fig. III; and Fig. III
is an enlarged detail View of one side of the sash.
My invention relates to an improved means of securing the panes of glass in a streetcar window; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the panes of glass of a car-window, and 2 represents the stiles. The stile at each side of the pane is composed of an angle plate or bar 3, forming one side and the back.
4 represents a plain plate that joins with the outer edge of the-back portion of the angle plate and completes the socket or. groove that receives a strip or block 5 of wood or other suitable material.
6 represents connecting-screws that join the plates together, and which pass through the blocks or strips 5. One edge of the strip 5 is beveled off, as shown at 7. The pane of glass 1 is provided with side linings or borders 8, preferably composed of rubber. These fit between the plates 3 and 4, as shown in Fig. II; and it will be seen that by tightening on the screws 6 the panes may be firmly clasped between the plates, the inclined face 7 allowing the outer edges of the plate to be pressed firmly against the linings S. \Vith this improved construction anydesired pressure may be obtained and the panes or glasses be held firmly in their sockets.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a street-car-window sash, of the panes 1, having linings 8, and the stiles consisting of plates 3 and 4, connecting-screws 6, and beveled strips 5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a streetcar-window sash, of the panes 1, having linings 8, angleplates 3, plain plates 4, connecting-screws 6, and strips 5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
PETER M. KLING.
