CONVERTIBLE BED AND TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed June 12, 1918. Serial No. 239,548.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. DONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of VJashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Bed and Table Attachments fort-Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to convertible bed and table attachments for automobiles and, more particularly, to improvements in the devices of this character which are illustrated and described in patent application, Serial N 0, 171,385 filed by me May 28, 1917.
The object of my improvements is to provide a device which is adapted to be employed as a table top when the bed portion of the apparatus is extended for use or otherwise.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement andicombination of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of apparatus embodying my invention, arranged for use as a table when the bed is extended: Fig. 2 is a sectional view through 22 of Fig.1, excepting that the table portion is disposed in vertical position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the apparatus adapted for use as a table with the bed folded, the bed being also illustrated by dotted lines upon the running board of a vehicle. Fig. 4 is an end elevational view taken from the right hand side of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a so-called running board extending laterally from the body 6 of an automobile. Connected to said running board by hinges 7 is a bed frame, hereinafter designated as the main frame, comprising transverse end bars 8, 9 and side rails, each of the latter being formed of two elements 11, 12 respectively connected by hinges 13 arranged so that the two frame members will be in spaced relations when occupying the positions in which they are illustrated by full lines in Fig. 3.
Secured to the bars 8 and 9 are the ends.
of a suitable spring fabric 14 to support a iattress and bedding. Connected from opposite sides to rail elements 12 by links 15 and 16 is a foot-frame comprising post members 17 connected by transverse rods 18 and 18 The links 15 and 16are of lengths and relatively disposed to cause the foot frame to be held in upright position when employed as shown in Fig. 1, with the bar 9 supported on links 15; and when the main frame members occupy the positions in which represented in F ig. 3 the links will serve to hold the foot frame between the rail elements 12. y
19 represents legs, one at each side of the main frame, and are detachably connected to the 'rail elements thereof by bolts 21. Said legs are desirably formed of angle bars, the lateral flange 19 of each being adapted to extend below the respective rail element and provide a shoulder 19 upon which such element is borne when a leg is used as a support, as shown in Fig. 3.
When the main frame is extended, the legs are employed as shown in Fig. 1 to secure the frame members against folding about the hinges 13.
A plate 20 is connected by hinges 20 to the frame bar 8 so as to be turned down upon the running board 5 (Fig. 1) to bridge the gap between the latter and the referred-to bar; or th plate 20 may be swung against a ledge 23 secured to the bar 9 for supporting the outer end of the associated frame member (Fig. 8) in substantially parallel relations to the other frame member.
When the bed is turned upwardly on the running board 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the plate 20 serves to prevent the mattress and bedding (not shown) from becoming soiled or wet by getting in contact with the running board.
The above described devices are, or may be substantially like corresponding devices shown and described in the aforementioned patent application.
According to the present invention the table top is hingedly connected to said foot frame for use as a table when the bed, or
main frame, is arranged as shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 3, and it may, also be be used as a foot board for the bed as when disposed as indicated by dotted lines 24 in Fig. l. a
More particularly, the table-top or board, as it will be hereinafter designated, consists of a rectangular board 24, or a plurality of boards, rigidly secured to longitudinally disposed reinforcing cleats 25 desirably of metal channel bars. Secured to these cleats are hinge elements 26 hav ing looped ends 26 through which extend the uppermost rod 18 of said foot-frame and serve to hingedly connect the board 2% to said foot frame.
The hinge elements 26, moreover, are located adjacent to the edge a of the board so that the latter will be supported upon the posts 17 instead of bearing upon the referred to rod when the board is in its full line position in Fig. 1. Connected by hinges 27 to the underside of said board and adjacent toits edge I), is a triangular shaped leg member 28 having an extension piece 29 of a substantially T-shape whose stem portion 29 is bifurcated. 30 represents a screw bolt extending through. an aperture in the leg member 28 and also through the slot .31 between the stem bifurcations. 82 is a thumb nut engaging the bolt 30 for clamping the leg member 29 in adjusted positions to the other me1nber.28 for the purposes of either supporting the free end of the board when it is disposed as-shown in Figs. 1 and l; or for securing the leg mem'bers in contracted relations as shown in Fig. 2, when the board 24 is turned down, as represented by dotted lines 24 in Fig. 1, against the foot frame.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the board may be used as a table top when the bed is folded as in Fig. 3 or when extended as in Fig. 1.
What I claim, is
1. The combination with a folding bed having a main frame comprising two hingedly connected members and a foot frame foldably connected to one of said members, of a board hingedly connected. to said foot frame for use as a table top when the main frame is in either its extended position at one endof the bed or above the foot frame and said main frame members when the same are folded in superposed relations.
2. The combination with a folding bed having a main frame and a foot frame foldably connected thereto, of a board hingedly connected to said foot frame and adapted for use as a table top when the mainframe is in either its folded or extended positions, and an extensible leg cooperating with said foot frame for adjust-ably supporting said board when the main frame is arranged IOI' use as a bed.
3. The combination with a bed having a foldable main frame, of a board adapted to be used selectively as a foot board for the bed and for a table-top when the bed is in its extended position, hinges connecting said board to said foot frame, and a leg hingedly connected to the board for supporting the same in cooperation with said foot frame when the board is to be em ployed as a table top.
Signed at Seattle, lVashington, this 4th day of June, 1918.
SAMUEL F. DONNELL.
