CONVERTIBLE CHAIR AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'Aug'. 8, 1922,
Application filed January 3; 1922. Serial No. 528,645.
The object of the invention is to provide.
a simple and relatively inexpensive, and at the same time strong and durable folding structure adapted to be arranged tooccupy a comparatively small space for transportation or storage and having means whereby it may be set up to form either a chair or. a table suitable for camping and other emergency purposes; and with this object in View.
the invention consists in a construction and conibinatlon of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown inthe accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device set up for use as a chair.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the de vice set up as a table;
Figure 3 is an edge View showing the device folded.
Figure a is a side view of the device showing it set up as a chair.
Figure 5 is a detail in perspective of the seat section showing the underside thereof.
Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views of the device in the form shown in Figure 2 respectively in the planes of the bracing loops or members.
The apparatus includes essentially a seat section 10 and a back section 11 which in'the construct-ion illustrated are shown as though constructedL of single fiat boards or plates but which in practice may be of any preferred framed construction having panels or fillers of cane or upholstered in any pre ferred manner to afford convenience to the occupant thereof particularly when the de: vice is set up as a chair; a support or leg structure carried by the seat section and consisting of intersecting pivotally connected looped leg frames 12 and 13; connecting links 14c between the back section and one of the leg frames, and bracing loops or members 15 and 16 carried by the back section and adapted to be used in supporting the back section in the horizontal position: when the dcviceis set up as a table.
The looped leg frames are p-ivotally connected at 17 and areadapted as indicated in Figure 3 to be folded into a compact fiat form in a common plane, and the upper end of the frame 12 is pivotally mounted as at 18 upon the seat sectionadjacentto its rear edge and preferably on the side edge thereof as shown, so that when folded the seat sec-.
tion nests within the foldedleg sections or frames, as also shown in Figure 3.
The seat section is provided at its front edge with rests 19 consisting of hooks for engagement-with a cross rod 20 connecting the upper ends of the side members of the leg frame 13, and asillustrated in the draw-:
ing these hooks may be formed as parts of metallic clips 21 extending longitudinally of and parallel with. the side edges of the seat section and provided at their rear ends with.
, the back section at a point intermediate ofthe lengths of the side edges thereof, slightly closer to one end which for conven ience may be termed the lower end when the said back section is in the upright position shown in Figures 1 and 4 for use as a chair element, and are pivotally connected at their front ends with the upper end of the leg frame 13 as by having eyes engaged with the transverse rod 20 thereof, so that the back section is permanently connected with the seat section through the intermediateagency of the support or leg member represented by the pivotally connected leg frames 12 and 13, and is adapted to be folded parallel with looped rods pivotally connected asat 21 and 22 with the side edges of the backsection at opposite sides of the pivotal connection 23 of the links 14 therewith, the pivotal point 22, however, being closer to-the pivotal point.
23 than is the pivotal point 21 for a reason which will be obvious by reference to Figure 2 wherein said supporting members are disposed in position to maintain the back section in parallel relation with the seat section to form a table top, and with the cross bars and 16" of said bracing members resting upon the surface of the seat section.
In the position of the parts adapting the device to be used as a table it is obvious that the link 14 will serve as diagonal braces,
tending to prevent a movement of the back section longitudinally with relation to the seat section, but in order that the rigidity of the structure in this adjustment may be assuredthe links are preferably provided with hooks members 2 lfor engagement with the upper bracing loops 15, when the device is set up asa table,as indicated in Figure 2, the length of thenose or finger 2't of each hook 24 being such that when the parts are brought to the position indicated in Figure Qwith the links 14 inclined to form braces and the loops l5and l6'disposed in substantially verticalplanes, the extremity of said nose or finger Wi li be below the plane of the seat and back sections of which the latter is longer than the former, pivotally connected intersecting leg frames of which one pivofted to the seatfsection and the other is adapted for detachable engagement therewith, linksconnecting intermediate points of the "sid'eedges of the back section with the upper I'GI'lClOif the second named leg frame, andswinging brace loops carried by the *bac'ksection for arrangement in bearingcontact with the seat section to support the back section in parallelism with the seat section. r
"2. A convertible table and chair having seat and *back sections of which the latter is longer than the former, pivotally connected intersecting legframes *ofwhich one is p1voted to the seat sectionand the other is adapted for detachable engagement therewith, links connecting intermediate points of the "side edges of the back section with the upper end of the second-named leg frame, and swinging brace loopscarried by the back section for arrangement 1n bearing contact with the seat section to support the "back'sectionin parallelism with the seat section, the seat section being provided at its front edge with returned hooks for engagement witht-he cross rod at the upper end of the said second-named leg frame to constitute the said detachable connection therewith. v i
3. A convertible table and chair having seat and back sections of which the latter is longer than the former, pivotally connected intersecting leg frames of which one is pivoted to the seat section and the other is adapted for detachable engagement therewith, links connecting intermediate points of the sideredges ofthe back section with the upper end of the second named leg frame, and swinging brace loops carried by the back section for arrangement in bearing contact with the seat section to support the back section in parallelism with the seat section, the sides of the leg frames being transversely spaced at a distance exceeding the width of theseat :sectionto permit of the folding of the leg frames and seat section tooccupy a common plane.
4. A convertible table and chair having seatand back sections ofvwhich' the. latter is longer than the former, ,pivotally connected intersecting leg'frames of which one is plvoted toltheseat section and the other,
is adapted fordetachable engagement therewith, links connecting intermediate points of the side edges of the back section with the uppergend of the second-named leg frame, and swinging brace loops carried by the back section for arrangement inbearmg contact with the seat sectlon' to support the back section in parallelism, with the seat sec tion, the said links being provided with hooks for engagement with the free end of the brace loop which bears upon the seat section adjacent to the upper end of the second named leg frame. j
5. A convertible table and chair having seat, and back sectionsof which the :latter is longer thanthe former, :pivotal ly connected intersecting leg frames of which one is pivoted to the seat section and the other is adapted for detachable engagement there-- with, links connecting intermediate points of the side edges of the back section with the upper end of the second-named leg frame, and swlnglng brace loops carried by the back section for arrangement in hearing contact withthe seat section in support the back section in parallelism with the seat section, the said links being provided with hooks for engagement with the free end of the brace loop which bears upon the seat section adjacent to the upper end of the second named leg frame, and said ho'okshaving their throats closed by the seat section when the back section .is parallel withthe,
seatsection. y
In testimony whereof he affixes-his signature." i
