RAIN-COAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patente APL .8, 1919..
Application filed February 9,1918. Serial No. 216,265.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARY T. BLAoK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of arrison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Rain-Coat, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ram coats, and aims to provide a novel and improved garment of that character for protecting the wearer from rain, snow, sleet and the l1ke It is the object of the invention to provide a rain coat which can be worn as an-outer garment, with the body suspended from a yoke which is supported conveniently on the shoulders of the wearer, in order that said body can hang loose.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a. rain coat embodying a novel hood for protecting the head of the wearer, said hood being foldable rearwardly out of the way, and affording satisfactory protection for the head, out of contact themwith, so as not to interfere with the movements of the head, breathing, sight and the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the coat, portions of the body and sleeves being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertlcal section on the lme 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing in detail the pivotal mountmg of the bows.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a yoke 1 to fit snugly on the shoulders of the wearer and against the chest and back, said yoke having the downwardly d1- verging front and rear portions 2 and 3 to fit comfortably against the chest and back of the wearer, and said portions are connected by the arched shoulder portions 4 to rest upon the shoulders comfortably. The
body 5 of the coat or garment is composed of rubber, rubberized fabric or other suitable water-proof material which is hung from the yoke 1, the body being secured to said yoke in any suitable manner, and having sleeves 6. The body 5 may be of any suitable size to afford the desired protection, and the front of the body can be slit, as at 7 for convenience in putting the coat on and taking it off, the flaps being attached together by means of buttons 8 or their equivalents.
The garment also includes a foldable hood embodying a suitable number of bows 9 provided at their ends with eyes 10 pivotally engaging the upstanding transverse staples or arched pivot members 11 carried by the portions 1 of the yoke 1, whereby said bows can swing forwardly and rearwardly about a transverse axis. A fabric covering 12 of any suitable flexible water-proof material, preferably the same as the body 5, is secured on the bows 12 and its lower rear edge portion is also attached to the rear portion 3 of the yoke to overlap the back and shoulders of the body 5 for shedding water. The forward edge of the covering 12 is attached to the forward bow 9, whereby when said how is swung forwardly, the covering 12 will be stretched and held in place by the bows to surround the head of the wearer, leaving a front opening between the forward bow and forward portion 2 of the yoke. The bows can be swung rearwardly adjacent to the rear portion 3 of the yoke, covering 13 rearwardly out of the way. The hood when unfolded will afford protection for the head without contacting therewith or resulting in prohibitive interference.
In order to hold the hood in place, straps 13 are fastened to the forward edge of the covering 12 and forward how 9, and their free ends are connected by glove or snap fasteners 14: or their equivalents with the yoke 1 at the forward portion thereof. I
The yoke 1 is of rigid construction, yet shaped to fit comfortably upon the shoulders of the wearer, and is large enough to readily pass over the head.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A garment embodying a yoke to fit on the shoulders of the wearer, a fabric body suspended from said yoke, bows pivoted on the to fold the yoke to swing forwardly and rearwardly, a as my own I have hereto afiixed my signafabric covering secured on said bows and the ture in the presence of two witnesses. rear portion of the yoke, straps connected to the forward bow, and detachable fasteners ZACHAR; BLAOKMAN for connecting the ends of the straps to the Witnesses: forward portion of the yoke. V H. R. WEEKS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing D. H. KING.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
