To all whom it .may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK J. SHpsTnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton Station, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in a Head Protector; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description yof the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
l The invention relates to protective means for the face and head includin a cap and a hood, the latter being remova le and comprising a transparent plate covering an opening formed in the front of the hood opposite the face.
One of the main features of the invention is the detachable connection of the protector with the cap or head covering whereby to admit of the cap being worn independently of the protector when it is desired to dispense with the latter on warm days.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without de arting from the nature of the, invention.
ferring to the accompanying drawing forming a plart of the specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the protector showing the same applied,
Figure 2 is a vertical central section there- Figure 3 is a horizontal section of the front ortion of the protector on the line 3 3 o Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a front view of the removable transparent plate covering the openings in the front of the protector, and
Figure 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5 5 ofFigure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The protector comprises a cap 1 and a hood 2, the latter flaring slightly at its lower end to conform to the shoulders and upper portion of the body. The cap 1 may be of `Vusual construction and design and includes a visor 3 which extends forwardly of the hood 2. The cap 1 and hood 2 are detachably connected. The front portion of the hood is cut away to provide an openinv 4 which is adapted to be closed by a removzible transparent plate 5 of mica, Celluloid or the like. The cap and hood may be of any suitable material treated in any manner to render the same water proof. The lower portion of the hood 2 is provided with fastenings 6, such as safety ins, whereby the protector may be secure to the clothing when in position. The fasteners 6 may be of any construction which will admit of the protector being detachably connected to the upper portion of the closing which may be of any nature.
A frame 7 surrounds the opening 4 at the bottom and sides thereof. The frame 7 may be of any flexible material .and serves to confine the transparent plate 5 when in position. rlhe outer edge of the bottom and side portions of the frame 7 are stitched or otherwise permanently attached to the corresponding parts of the hood 2 bordering u on the opening 4. The bottom and side e ge portions of the transparent plate 5 are confined by the frame 7 and are stitched therewith to the hood as indicated most clearly in Fi re 5. The upper edge of the plate 5 is reinforced by a wire 8 which is whip stitched thereto. The hood is detachably connected with the cap or other form of head covering and hooks 9 and eyes 10 are provided for this purpose. Any suitable fastening means may be rovided.
