Description

e s. WEBB ea 04 B. ANDERSON,
ANIMAL PROOF GARBAGE CAN.
x362 2633mm iT D sTATEs OFEIG M nnesota GARBAGE-cam To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GURN S. WEBB and OLOr B. ANDERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Animal-Proof Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to animal proof garbage cans, and has for its object the provision of a garbage or refuse can of this character which during use may remain closed and not susceptible to the annoying situation of having its contents thrown about whenever the can is upset. It is, of course, imperative that cans which contain refuse be and remain in a closed condition not only to prevent offensive odors, but also for sanitary reasons, and furthermore to prevent the tain its circular outline.
breeding of mosquitoes, flies and other pests which breed in the presence of refuse or stagnant liquids.
Our invention therefore has for its object the provision of a can or receptacle of this character which has means whereby the en- 'tire top portion thereof may be removed for purposes of emptying, this top being held inplace by means quite secure, to be unfastened only when emptying the can. This top then carries a further closure or lid which by an easily operable catch can be suitably opened and closed rapidly if desired for the purpose of introducing garbage or refuse into the in terior of the can.
We will explain our invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing, illustrating one embodiment thereof, in which Figure l is a top view of a can constructed in accordance with our invention; 7 c Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line aa of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a clearly illustrating the catch for holding the top in position.
Our improved structure includes a preferably cylindrically shaped can 1, desirably made of metal which isadapted to hold the cover 2 in position. This cover preferably has a reinforced portion 3 thereby to main- The lower portion of-this cover is rounded as shown at 4 furtherto, strengthen it, thus providing a fragmentary side viewmore S peciiicatioh of Letters ra a. i Pat nted M3 4,1919
rounded rib or rim. The cover is held in place upon the can by means of two catches 5 and 6 which form parts of the spring plates 5 and 6 These catches are pressed in position by means of finger pieces 7 in the form of cams held upon the spindles 7 By g-,1 s. wes ern 01.01 B. ANDERSON; OF MAEQUETT E, MICHIGAN.
rotating the right hand finger piece 7 (Fig.
2) in a contra-clockwise direction the cam portion thereof is taken out ofthe path of the spring catch 6, thus permitting the upper part of the spring catch 6 to move to the right to release the cover. It will be readily seen that the catches 5 and 6 can be swung about their pivots to hold the cover in place, or may be swung outwardly to release the cover. Thus when it is desired to empty the can the catches 5 and 6 are released so as 'to remove the entire cover whereupon the contents may be readily removed. It is, of course not desirable to use means of this character when merely introducing the material into the can, and for this reason a more quickly operable structure is utilized,
which structure normally holds in a closed position the lid 9. This lid by means of the arms 10 is pivotally supported upon a spindle 11. The opposite end of the cover has a latch 12 pivoted at 13, as shown, and
suitably confined in its movements by the guide 1%. This latch 12 cooperates with the arm 15 to hold the lid normally in a closed position. the annular opening 16 in the top is bent upwardly to cooperate more thoroughly with the rounded rim 17 of the lid, thus to form a perfect'closure. I
From what has thus been described the nature of our invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art. Having, however, thus set forth one embodiment which our invention may take, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent is:
A device of the character described, comprising, a can, a removable cover for said can, a strengthening rib for the cover disposed on the exterior thereof, locking mecha- It will likewise be seen that I i i nism including a spring finger for holding ardundf'the inner; face thereof-atithe iniler our-names this,18th day of August A; 1)., side of said Strengthening rib,- said rein 1916; forcing rim being constructed to seat iipon GURN S. WEBB. the can and-tedetermine-the position of the B. ANDERSON; 5 strengthening rib relative to the spring Witnesses: I
