UNITED-STATES '3 PATENT O FICE.
THOMAS 13. Russian, on Fon'r VALLEY, GEORGIA.
DISH, 8 o.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,239,'dated September 4, 1883.
Application filed July 25,1883. (No model.) n
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Valley, in the county of Houston and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dishes and other Receptacles,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
receive a cover.
This invention relates to dishes, cooking: vessels, buckets, and all other receptacles hav ing a circular mouth or rim and adapted to Its object is to provide simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient means for attaching the cover in position on the body of the vessel, whereby the cover can be conveniently adjusted or removed, will remain securely in position, and will serve as a means by which the vessel can be lifted and. transported from place to place.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dish embodying my improvements and having the cover separated from the body. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, showing the operation of the cover in dotted lines. Fig. 3. p is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig.-
4 is a vertical sectional view, illustrating a modification and showing theinvention ap;
plied to a spittoon.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the vessel, which may be of any suitable construction, having a circular rim around its mouth 13, this rim being in the form of an outwardly-flaring flange, 0, having a single notch or recess, D, asshown. Below this flange C is preferably formed another circumferential horizontal supporting-flange, F, the purpose of which will be presently described. At the ends of the notch D, and just below the same, marks E E are provided, which will serve as a guide to the notch when the same is closed by the flange of the cover.
G is the cover, which is formed with two dia1netrically-opposite rim-flanges, H and I, that project inwardly and correspond to the flange O on'the body A. The flange or catch H on the cover is somewhat smaller than the flange or catch I, and is of a length corresponding to the recess D. The top edge, J, of the.
rim of the body A is preferably formed horizontal, as shown, and the periphery of the cover is correspondingly formed on its under side, as shown at K, to form a neat joint between the body and cover, the latter being preferably provided with a downwardly-extending peripheral flange, L, which serves to project the edge of the flange 0 when the cover is in position. In the case of a dish or similar vessel or receptacle the cover is preferably formed conveXo-concave, as shown, and is provided with a central knob or handle, M, by
which the dish can be lifted, when the cover is in position, and transported. WVhen adapted for spittoons, the cover is preferably formed concavo convex, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and is formed with a central open; ing, N. When spittoons are formed in this manner, the cover can be readily removed to permit convenient washing and cleaning of the interior of the body, so that the vessel can al ways present a clean and neat appearance, and
be in no way offensive to theeye.
My invention is also adapted for toilet-boxes and the like, and is, in fact, adapted for all kinds of vesselshaving a circular rim and adapted to receive a cover. I
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings the flange O is formed round instead of angular, and the flanges H and I are'correspondingly concaved, this form being preferred under some circumstances.
The operation and advantages of my invention, will be readily understood and appreciated. In adjusting the cover tothe body it is first relatively placed in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the large flange or clasp I is engaged under the flange (l at the side of the latter opposite to the recess D, which will bring the smaller flange, H, directly over the said recess, when it can be passed down through the same and the cover given a turn to lock it in position. The top flange, G, retains the cover to the body, while the bottom flange, F, provides a rest to steady the cover; but this latter flange, F, is not essentialto my invention. 1
I claim as my invention 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a vessel comprising a body having acircular rim formed with an outwardly projecting flange, in which is provided a recess or notch, and a cover provided with separate inwardlyextending corresponding flanges, one of which corresponds to the recess or notch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the body of the Vessel, having a circumferential rim-flange pro- 5 jecting outwardly and formed with a single notch or recess, of a cover having two diametrically-opposite flanges or catches projecting inwardly from its under side, the said covercatches being adapted to be engaged under the body-flange and to turn thereon, while one of the cover flanges or catches is of a length corresponding to the notch in the body-flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the body having the circular rim-flange projecting outwardly, and provided with the single notch or recess,
