To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV C. PANSEGRAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garbage receptacles and similar vessels and it is its partlcular object to provide means whereby the receptacle may be easily and elfectively cleaned.

My invention is especially adaptable to garbage cans in ordinary household use and consists in a bottom which may be removed from the receptacle in a very simple manner for cleaning purposes and in certain details of construction and combination of parts which will be more fully explained hereafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the receptacle; Fig. 2 is a similar section, taken at right angles to the plane on which Fig. 1 is shown; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the receptacle and Fig. 4 a fragmentary section taken along the plane of line 44 in Fig. 2. v

Like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.

1 is a cylinder.

2 is a strip having its downturned flanges 3 riveted to the walls of the cylinder at its lower end. Upon the strip 2 rests a base 4 provided with upwardly bent sides 5. To opposite sides of the base 4 are fastened members 6 and 6 respectively. These side members extend upwardly, their loop shaped portions 7 and 7 passing over notches 8 and 8 in the top of the cylinder 1. Loops 7 and 7 terminate in outwardly extended ends 9 and 9 which are provided with openings 10 and 10 adapted to receive a handle 11.

Upon the lower side of strip 2 is fastened securely and substantially at right angles to the same another strip 12 having its ends 13 and 13 bent close and extending parallel to the lower side of base 4.

14 and 14 are lugs fastened to the lower side of base 4 at opposite sides of strip 12 as shown in Fig. 3. Ends 15 and 15 of lugs 14 and 14 are bent downwardly to clear the ends 13 and 13 of strip 12 as illustrated in Fig. 4.

16 is a cover provided with sides 17 and a handle part 18, sides 17 being sufliciently long so as to cover notches 8 and 8 on the top of cylinder 1.

The operation of my device is as follows: If it is desired to thoroughly clean the receptacle, it is only necessary to slightlv turn the base 4 within the cylinder 1 by means of handle 11 until ends 15 and 15 of lugs 14 and 14 disengage the upwardly bent ends 13 and 13 of strip '12, when the base 4 can be lifted entirely out of cylinder 1 and subjected to thorough cleansing. The position of the base, when the lugs are disengaged from the strip 12, is indicated in broken lines in Fig. 3.

It can readily be seen that when in the locked position the garbage can may be used exactly like other cans not having the removable bottom.

It is of course understood that many modifications may be made in the form and proportion and numbers of parts of this can, parts may be used in connection with other devices, and parts may be used without employing all of the same without departing from the spirit of this invention or losing the advantages of the same. I do not, therefore desire to be limited to the details of the disclosure which I have made, but

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:

1. In a receptacle for the purpose specified, a removable base, means retaining said base within the receptacle, and means for disengaging said retaining means by turning the said base in its plane about its own axis.

2. In a receptacle for the character stated, a removable base, means retaining said 'base within the receptacle, means for disengaging said retaining means by turning the said base in its plane about its own axis, and means for lifting the said base out of the receptacle.

3. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member at the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, means retaining said base within the shell, and means for disengaging said retaining means by turning the said base about its own axis.

4. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, means retaining said base within the shell, and means for disengaging said retaining means by turning the said base about its own axis.

5. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, lugs on the underside of said base engaging means retaining said base within the shell, and means for disengaging said lugs from the said retaining means by turning the said base about its own axis.

6. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, lugs on the underside of said base, a locking bar fastened to said bracing member and in engagement with said lugs, and means for disengaging said lugs from the said locking bar by turning the said base about its own axis.

7. receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, lugs on the underside of said base, a locking bar fastened to said bracing member and in engagement with said lugs, and means for disengaging said lugs from the said locking bar by turning the said base about its own axis, said means including two uprights fastened to the said base, the upper portion of said uprights being loop shaped, and adapted to pass over the upper edge of the said shell. 7 Y

8. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, lugs on the underside of said base, a locking bar fastened to said bracing member and in engagement with said lugs, and means for disengaging said lugs from the said locking bar by turning the said base about its own axis, said means including two oppositely arranged uprights fastened to the said base, the upper portion of said uprights being loop shaped and adapted to pass over notches in the upper edge of the said shell, and operating means connected to the said loop shaped portions, substantially as set forth.

9. A receptacle comprising a shell, a bracing member extending crosswise over the lower end of said shell, a removable base resting on said bracing member, lugs on the underside of said base, a locking bar fastened to said bracing member and in engagement with said lugs, and means for disengaging said lugs from the said locking bar by turning the said base about its own axis, said means including two oppositely arranged uprights fastened to the said base, the upper portion of said uprights being loop shaped and adapted to pass over notches in the upper edge of the said shell, operating means connected to the said loop shaped portions and a cover provided with downwardly projecting sides, said sides to be sufficiently long so as to cover the said notches in the upper edge of said shell, substantially as set forth.
