To NZZ whom 'it muy concern lle it known that I. LINFonn J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek. iilichigan. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle- Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacle covers and operating means therefor.
My improvements are especially designed b v me for embodiment in garbage or Waste holders and I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings as I have so embodied them. M v improvements may, however, be readily embodied in and are advantageous for use in structures designed for other purposes.
The main objects of this invention are: First. to provide an improved receptacle cover and operating means therefor. Second, to provide an improved receptacle cover and operating means therefor, which is removable bodily from the receptacles so that the receptacle may be changed from time to time. Third7 to provide an improved operating means and lock for receptacle covers. Fourth, to provide an improved cover operating and locking means adapted to lock the cover in both its closed and open positions. Fifth, to provide an improved receptacle cove and operating and locking means which is simple in structure, easy to operate and vnot likely to get out of repair.
Further objects. and objects relating to details and economies of Vconstruction and operation will definitely1 appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the :ucompanying drawing forming a part of this specification` in which:

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the receptacle 1 may be of any size and shape best suited for the purpose for which it is intended. The receptacle cover Q is provided with an opening 3 and has a closure or lid l for this opening. The cover 2 is provided with a peripheral flange 5, the diameter of the Hange being substantially greater than the diameter of the receptacle. See Fig. III. The opening 3 of the cover has flanges 6 and 7 depending within the receptacle, the flange 7 at the rear edge of the opening being wider than the flange 6. The closure or lid 4 is provided with a flange S at its outer edge and a flange 9 at its rear edge. The flange 8 is adapted to close over the flange 5 of the cover proper.
The closure 4 is provided with a hinge member 10 secured to the top thereof and having a knuckle 11.l while the cover proper is provided with a hinge member 19. having knuckles v13. The pintle 14 is arranged through these knuckles to project at the sides of the cover.
The cover is detachabty secured to the receptacle by means of the U-shaped spring retaining fingers 15 which are secured to the cover flange by one arm so that the other arm engages under the bead-like rim 16 at the upper edge of the receptacle and a clamp comprising a hook member 17 adapted to embrace the flange and engage the rim, as shown in Fig. III, and the lever 18 pivoted on the cover brackets 19. This lever 18 has a crank-like odset 20 between the brackets 19 on which the hook 17 is pivoted. The pivot part of this offset is disposed so tllat when the lever is thrown forwardly to the position shown in Fig. III, the hook .is
thrown into engagement with the bead and drawn up tight. The clamp is disposed oppositely to the retaining members 15 so tllat the cover cannot be raised from or shifted laterally on the receptacle. To release the cover, -it is only necessary to swing the lever 18 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. III, which disengages the hook and the cover can be lifted from the receptacle. I preferably provide a spring .20 for holding the lid in its closed position, one end of the spring being secured to the under side of the cover at 21 and the other end at the other side of the lid 22, the spring' being passed under the flanges 7 and 9 of the cover and lid respectively.
Io 'automatically operate the cover closure` -I provide a bail-like lever :23 pivotally mounted on the l'langers 24 at 2 5. These hangers '2+ are secured to the flange 5 of the cover by rivets 213 and depend at the sides of the receptacle when the cover is in place thereon. To the flanges of the closure I secure arms 27, which arms are pivoted on the projecting ends of the pintle 2l. the arms having upwardly oll'set portions 28 to receive the pilitle. The rear ends of the arms are provided with -pins 29 engaging slots 30 in the levers. These slots have transverse portions 31 at their llppei ends extending forwardly from their longitudinal portions. Coiled springs- 32 are secured to theliangers and to the forward ends of the lovers and act to hold the upper ends of the levers normally rearward so that the pins 29 normally lie in the transverse portions of these level' slots. When the pills are in this position, it is impossible to open the cover by liftilig thereon, bllt the cover is readily released and actuated -to open t-lie.
Sallie by pressing downward on -the lever which first swings the upper elld 'of the levers forward carrying the pins 29 into the longitudinal portions of the slot and then swings the arms to opeli the closure. The pivots for the lever and closure are prefern ably so disposed that the upper ends of the lever swing past the closure pivots when the closllre is fully opened. Then opeli. the closure lllay be locked ill its opeli position by pushing rearwardly thereon. This agaili carries the pins into the transverse portions of the slots. After the pills are thus engaged, the closure will relnain in its open position until released by a slight movement of the lever. If the closure is not manipulated to lock it in its open position, it alltomatically closes on the releasing of the lever.
In the modification sliowll in Figs. V11 alid VIII, a support 33 is provided for the receptacle l. The support is provided with uprights 35 at the sides of the receptacle and the lever 36 is mounted on these uprights. The closure 37 of the cover is connected to the lever in the sallle lllalllle as described in the preferred construction and its operation is the salne` the structures sllowll in Figs. VII alid VIII being an embodiment of lny improvements in a structure having a support or holder for the receptacle.
With the parts forllled and arranged as I have illustrated, the structure is simple and economical to produce and very easy to opcrate. An elfective lock is provided without the necessity for catches and the like. In the embodiment sllowli in Figs. I to VI, the cover with its operating means can be changed from one receptacle to another very readily. In either of the embodi-v ments the cover can be locked ill its raised position when desirable and when closed it is effectively locked and can not be opened by dogs or the like and will not be accidentally opened by being tipped over. This renders the structure especially desirable for garbage calls and for waste receptacles in shops alld factories where it is desirable to have receptaclesthat can be readily opened and at the saine time are automatically closed and locked.
I have illustrated anddescribed illy ilnplovelllents in detail in two practical forlns in which I have embodied the same. I have not attempted to illustrate and describe variol-ls other embodiments which I colltelnplate. as I believe the disclosure iliade will enable those skilled in the art to which my lliventlon relates to embody or adapt the same .as conditions lilay require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a down-turned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater tllan that of the receptacle, said cover having an opening therein and flanges at the edges of the opening projecting downwardly within the receptacle, a U-'shaped cover retaining member secured by one arm to said peripheral cover lange,'the other arln being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clanlp disposed oppositely to said member and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the riln of the receptacle. alld a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected. said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook` a closure for said cover opeliillg having a dowlitllrlied flange at its edge elllbracing said cover flange. and a downwardly projecting flange at its rear JID edge, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides of the cover, arms pivoted on the ends of said pintle and secured to the flange of said closure, hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, a bail-shaped lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having longitudinal slots therein with transverse portions extending forwardlyat their upper ends, pins on said arms engaging said slots, a spring connected to said lever-and to one of said hanger members and normally holding said lever with the pins in the transverse portions of said slots, and acoiled Spring arranged over said flange at the rear edge of said closure and secured at one end to the underside of said cover and at its other end to the under side of said closure.
2, In a structure of the class described,
the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a down-turned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater than that of the receptacle, said cover having an opening therein, a U-shaped cover retaining member secured by one arm to said peripheral cover flange, the other arm being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover-clamp disposed oppositely to said member and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the'cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle, and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook, a closure for said cover opening having a downturned flange at its edge embracing said cover flange, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides of the cover, arms p1voted on the ends of said pintle and secured to the flange of said closure, hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, a bail-shaped lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having longitudinal slots therein with transverse portions extending forwardly at their upper ends, pins on said arms engaging said slots, a spring connected to said lever and to one of said hanger members and normally holding said lever. with the pins in the transverse portions of said slots.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a downturned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater than that of the receptacle, said cover having an opening therein and flanges at the edges of the opening projecting downwardly within the receptacle, a -U-shaped cover retaining member secured by one arm to said peripheral cover flange, the other arm being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to said member and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle, and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected,

4. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a downturned peripheral flange of a diameter Substantially greater than th t of the receptacle, said cover having an openingr therein, a U-shaped cover retaining member secured by one arm to said cover flange, the other arm being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to sa-id member and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle, and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook, a closure for s aid cover opening having a downturned flange at its edge embracing said cover flange, and a hinge for said closure.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a downturned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater than that of the receptacle, said cover having an opening therein, U-shaped cover retaining members secured by one arm to said cover flange, the other arms of said members being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to said retaining members and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle, and a lever to which Said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook, a closure for said cover opening. a hinge for said closure. a pair of hangers` mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of `said receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted on said"hangers and having operating connections with said closure, anda closing spring for said closure.

In a. structure vof the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having a downturned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater than that of the receptacle, said cover having an opening therein, U-shaped cover retaining members secured by one arm to said cover lflange, the other arms of said members being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to said retaining members and comprising a hook adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle` and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so tha-t the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook, and a closure for said cover opening.
7. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, a cover having a downturned peripheral flange of a diameter substantially greater' than that of the receptacle, U-shaped cover retaining members secured by one arm to said cover flange, the other arms of said members being adapted to engage the rim of the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to said retaining members and comprising a.hool adapted to embrace the cover flange and engage the rim of the receptacle, and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that theI hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever isactuated to engage the hook.
8. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having an opening therein, a cover retaining member arranged to engage the receptacle, a cover clamp disposed oppositely to said cover retaining member and comprising a hook adapted to engage the receptacle, and a lever to which said hook is pivotally connected, said lever being pivotally mounted on said cover so that the hook pivot swings below the plane of the lever pivot when the lever is actuated to engage the hook, a closure for said opening, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides of the cover, arms piv oted on the ends of said pintle and secured to said closure, a pair of hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having longitudinal slots therein with transverse portions at their upper ends, and pins on said arms engaging Said slots.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having an opening therein, a cover retaining niembe arranged to engage the receptacle` a 'cover clamp disposed oppositely to sa'id cover retaining member and comprising a hook adapted to engage the receptacle. a closure for said opening, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides oi' the cover, arms pivoted on the y ends of said pintle and secured to said closure. a pair of hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having operative connections to said arms.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover naving an opening therein, means for de.- tachably securing said cover to said receptacle, a closure for said opening, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides of the cover, arms lpivoted on the ends of said pintleand secured to said closure, hangers mounted. on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, a bail-shaped lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having longitudinal slots therein with transverse portions at their upper ends, pins on said arms engaging said slots, and a spring connected to said lever and to one of said hangers to hold the lever nor'- mally upward.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having an opening therein, means for detachably securing saidv cover to said receptacle, a pivoted closure for said opening, arms on said closure, hangers mounted on said cover to depend .at the sides of said receptacle, a bail-shaped lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having longitudinal slots therein with transverse portions at their upper ends, pins on said arms engaging said slots, and a spring connected to said lever and to one of said hangers to hold the lever normally upward.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover' having an opening therein, means for detachably securing said cover to said receptacle, a closure for said opening, a hinge for said closure provided with a pintle projecting at the sides of the cover, arms pivoted on the ends of said pintle and secured to said closure, hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, and alever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having operating connections with said arms.

In a structure of the classdescribed, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover having an opening therein, means for detachably securing said cover to said receptacle, a. pivoted closure for said opening, arms on said closure, hangers mounted on said cover to depend at the sides of said receptacle, and a lever pivotally mounted on said hangers and having operating connections with said arms.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover closure, an arm on said closure, a pivotally mounted lever yhaving a longitudinal slot therein with a transverese portion at its upper end, a pin on said arni engaging said slot, and a Spring arranged to normally hold the lever with said pin engaged in the transverse portion ot' said slot.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle. a Cover therefor provided with a pivoted closure, a hanger on said cover, means for operating said pivoted closure comprising a lever pivoted on said hanger and operativel)v connected to said Iclosure and adapted to lock the closure in its closed position, said lock being disengaged b v the initial actuation of the lever.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a receptacle, ot' a pivoted closure therefor. an arm on said closure, a` pivoted actuating lever having a slot therein with a transverse portion at ite`l upper vsure, a pivoted actuating lever having a slot therein with a transverse portion at its upper end, a pin on said arm engaging said slot.
