J. M. TRIGGS RECEPTACLE LOCK Filed Aug. )5. 1923 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. TRIGGS, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MAJESTIC COM- PANY, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA. i
RECEPTACLE LOCK.
Application filed August 13, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs M. Tnreos, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Receptacle Lock, which. invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to receptacles, and is particularly intended for use in connection with garbage receptacles.
In the use of receptacles of this class, particularly when setting in yards and alleys, considerable difiieulty and annoyance is caused by dogs knocking over the garbage pails or receptacles to get at the contents and scattering the garbage.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lid construction and lock therefor for use in connection with garbage pails and other receptacles whereby the lid is prevented from opening or removal from the pail except when the carrying handle is in usable carrying position. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a central vertical section of a garbage pail embodying the invention, with the lid members in locked position thereon, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pail or receptacle, such as is commonly used for holding garbage, and 2 a lid member having, in the present instance, a downwardly flanged outer edge portion adapted to seat down over the upper edge of the receptacle to close the top opening thereof. The lid 2 is of ring form to provide a central opening 8 of substantial size therein to permit the introduction of garbage or other matter into the receptacle when the lid is in position thereon. A cover 4t for closing the lid opening 3 is hinged to the lid at one side of the opening. In the presentinstance this is accomplished by forming hinged lugs 5 and 6 respectively on the lid Serial No. 657,014.
and cover in position to lap each other and to receive a pivot bolt or member 7.
The cover et carries at its inner side a catch member 8 for engaging under the lid 2 at the inner edge of the opening 3 to retain the cover closed. The catch 8 is carried in the present instance by a U-shaped guide 9, which is bolted or otherwise suitably sccured at its looped portion to the inner side of the cover 4 adjacent to the edge thereof opposed to its hinged edge, and its legs are slotted to permit the catch 8 to slidingly project therethrough. A coiled contractile spring 10 is mounted on the catch member and has one end thrust against a stop 11 on the catch and acts to normally retain the catch in locking position. The nose of the catch member 8 is bevelled at its outer side to cause a retraction thereof when passing the edge of the lid 2 during a closing movement of the cover. A knob 12 is mounted on the central top portion of the cover at to be grasped when opening the cover, and in order to serve as a control for the latch member 8 it is rotatably mounted in the cover and has the inner end of its stem provided at the inner side of the cover with a laterally projecting finger 13, which engages within a registering notched portion of the catch member 8 to efiect a retraction of the catch member from lid engaging position when the knob '12 is turned from normal position.
The carrying member 14- for the receptacle 1 is, in the present instance, of bail form and is provided near its ends 1 *ith inwardly projecting trunnions or journal portions 15, which project in diametrically opposed rclation through bearing openings in the receptacle sides near its top. The ournals 15 are provided at their inner ends within the receptacle with fingers 16, which angle therefrom and are of substantially L-form. These fingers are so positioned with respect to the bail member 14 that when the bail member is swung to a predetermined position at a side of the receptacle the outer ends of the fingers will have entered registering loops 17 depending from the inner side of the lid 2 and thereby act to securely lock the lid against removal from the receptacle until the bail member has been swung upward sufiiciently to withdraw the fingers from engagement with the loops 17. The hail memraising knob 12 of the cover.
her is releasably retained in lid locking position by engagement" with a spring catch member l8-secured to the receptacle side.
It is evident that the lid 2 is securely locked in position on the receptacle when the bail member is in its lower nonusable position, in which position it is releasably retained by the catch 18, and that access to the interior of the receptacle for depositing garbage therein may then only be had through the lid opening 3 by an opening of the cover l. This cover is normally locked against opening by the catch 8, the JDO'VGIDCHCS Ot'which are controlled by the lVhen it is desiredto dump the contents of the receptaclc the bail or carrying member 14 is first raised to release the "lid 2 and the entire top construction may then'be removed to facilitate dumping. In order to facilitate placing the lid on the receptacle in proper position for the loop members 17 to register with the locking fingers '16, the receptacle is provided at its outer side near its top with air-outwardly projecting stud 19, with which a knotQO in the lower edge flange of the lid 2 engages.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of th'e'parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing fromthe spirit an open top, a lid structure removably mounted on the receptacle, 'a bail member hingedly connected to the receptacle and having a portion projecting into the receptacle and operable-to engage and lock the lid structure to the receptacle when the bail member is in nonusable position, and to release the lid structure when the bail member is moved to carrying position.
3. In combination, a receptacle, a lid structure removably mounted on the receptacle and having a part projecting down into the receptacle, a bail member hinged to the receptacle and having an angled part projecting into the receptacle for pivotal movements with the'bail member and operable to engage the inwardly projecting part by different predetermined movements of the bail to lock thelidstructine to the receptacle and torelease'the same.
5. In-combination, a'receptacle, a lid removably mounted on and enclosingthe top of the receptacle and having a filling opening therein, a cover 'movably mounted on the lid for closing its opening, and-a-bail member hinged to'thereceptacle and having means within the receptacle for engaging the lid and holding it in closing relation to the receptacle when the bail member is in one position of its movement.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
JAMES M. TRIGGS.
