To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. JoIiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in printingappliances, and has rela tion more particularly to a device of this general character which is adapted to be applied to the digit of a hand so that desired data such as dates may be readily applied to articles various kinds at the time that such articles are picked up the hands.

It is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved appliance of this general character wherein a digit-engaging membe is Prov ded wi m a s wh y type-bearing ribbons or the like may be adjustably engaged therewith, together with means whereby the working type of the ribbon may be brought into contact with the Work independently of the remaining types.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved printing appliance whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation illustrating a printing appliance constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the band or digit embracing member in a flattened state; and

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a relatively wide split band preferably formed of metal, possessing inherent resiliency and which band is adapted to be engaged with the digit of a hand with the split portion thereof overlying the back of the digit. i

The central portion of the band B is pressed or ofi'set outwardly as indicated at 1 and said ofl'set portion extends transversely of the band and is provided with. a plurality of parallel slits 2 in close proximity. The slits 2 are preferably two in number for a purpose which will hereinafter be self-evident. The band B at opposite sides of the offset portion 1 is provided with a plurality of transversely disposed slots 3, preferably two in number, and each of which slots being of a width materially in excess of the slits 1. Each end portion of the band B outwardly of the slots 3 is pro vided with a series of transversely spaced openings 4 herein disclosed as four in number.

R denotes a ribbon or rubber mat having produced on a surface thereof a series of longitudinally spaced types or printing symbols, and said ribbon or mat is preferably continuous by having the extremities of the mat cemented or otherwise secured together.

The ribbon or mat R is threaded through a pair of openings 4 alined longitudinally of the band B and also threaded through the slits 2 whereby a type or printing symbol is positioned at the crest of the offset portion 1. The adjacent type or printing symbols extend within the slots 3 whereby creeping of the ribbon R longitudinally of the band is prevented.

As many ribbons or rubber mats B may be employed in connection with the band B as there are openings 4, but in the present instance four openings are disclosed so that the appliance may be particularly adapted for use by packers and handlers of various articles to date their goods or wares at the time such persons pick the goods up into their hands. I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any specific use of my improved appliance, as the same will depend upon the requirements of practice.

It is also preferred that the ribbon or mat- R be of such a size as to facilitate the maintenance of the band B upon the digit of a hand due to the elasticity thereof, although it will be evident that close fitting of the digit as regards the ribbon R is not necessary at all times.

From the foregoing description, it is and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A printing appliance of the class described comprising a finger-engaging band having a series of transversely disposed slit-s and a series of transversely disposed openings at opposite sides of the slits, and a type carrying ribbon threaded through a pair of openings one at each side of the slits and through the slits.

2. A printing appliance of the class described comprising a finger-engaging band having a series of transversely disposed slits and a serles of transversely disposed openings at opposite sides of the slits, a type carrying ribbon threaded through a pair of openings one at each side of the slits and through the slits, the portion of the band provided with the slits being offset outwardly.

8. A printing appliance of the class described comprising a finger-engaging band having a series of transversely disposed slits and a series of transversely disposed openings at opposite sides of the slits, and a type carrying ribbon threaded through a pair of openings one at each side of the slits and through the slits, said band being split and the ribbon being endless, said ribbon affording additional means for maintaining the band in applied position.

4. A printing appliance of the class detransversely disposed slots.
