O. H. ARNOLD HAIR FASTBNER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 1911.

iwucmtoz OLIVER I-I. ARNOLD, OF WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA HAIR-FASTENEE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Feb. 6.191%
Application filed July 12, 1911. Serial No. 638,117.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER H. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ll illnington, in the county of New Hanover, State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of hair fasteners, either for use as ordinary hair pins, hair ornaments, or the like, which are designed to be prevented from accidental displacement and loss.
The construction and peculiar advantages of the invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. of one form of the invention, full lines indicating the normal position of the prongs and dotted lines showing the movable prong deflected as when being introduced into the hair; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig.2, and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a slightly modified form.
, Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters. p
This improved hair fastener comprises a pair of prongs 10 and 11 connecting to each other at. 12, or constituting in effect each a continuation of the other.
At 13 is shown an auxiliary prong which, throughout a considerable portion of its. length, lies within the prong 11 and'in contact therewith. Said prong 13 at some convenient point as at 1 1, is curved or turned so as to pass outward from within the prong 11 and is thence continued around the bow or loop 15 of the device and is connected in any suitable manner to the main device at 12. The bowedportion 16 of theauxiliary prong is preferably spaced from the bow l throughout its length. v
As indicated in Fig. 2 the prongs 11 and v 13 may be bent laterally from the central plane of the device at 17 and '18. It is to be understood however thatthoexact form or proportions of the prongs may bevaried to a considerable extent withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention. The form of the device shown in Fig. 4 differs from the other in that the prongs 11' and 13 are so arranged as to slightly cross each other.
The mode of operation of the fasteneris as follows: The device is grasped between the thumb and finger so as't/(Tapply pressure the elasticity of the device,.especially(' f the auxiliary prong, serving to retain it in engagement withthe hair.- A portion of the hair, when the device is introduced to its full length, will pass beyond the point 14 and will be retained within the space be-. tween the loops 15 and 16, such hair being caused to make a double loop around the prongs as indicated in Fig. 3, due to thecurving of the auxiliary prong around the other. The fastener will thus be held securely in place for all practical purposes, but may be easily withdrawn by the fingers in the usual manner. The device may be made of any material suitable for its purpose, and the. novel features of construction may be applied to hair ornaments of a more elaborate design than is illustrated herewith.
Having thus described a preferred embodiment of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The hereindescribed hair fastener cormprising a pair of prongs .connectedztogether in a loop, and an auxiliary flexible prong mally with the'inner face of one of said first, mentioned prongs and' thence bentlsiterally and outwardly therefrom and curved around the loop connecting the first: inen? 1 tioned prongs and spaced thereirp mgsuba stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto fixed my signature in the presence. of
' W. G. WEBB," I J. D. MOCAR EY-L having one portion thereof "in contact nor.--
