Be it known that I, Mrs. MINNIE JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of 0010- rado, have invented a new and useful Drafting Implement, of which the following is a specification.

This inventionrelates more particularly to means for laying out or drafting dress-patterns and the like. I

The principal object is to provide a simple article of manufacture having practically all the curves and measurements necessary in the dressmakers art, the curves and scales being so associated and related that the device may be used and manipulated with great convenience and without the necessity of repeated reversals and confusing changes.

A further object is to provide a structure wherein the various features can be readily identified and explained, thus making the implement peculiarly applicable for use in schools of instruction.

The preferred embodiment of'the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a lon itudinal sectional view substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the embodiment illustrated the device consists of a fiat-sided body-plate 4, having a longitudinal straight edge 5 and an opposite longitudinal reversely-curved 'ed e 6. The end edges 7 and'8 are parallel, an the edge 7 is considerably longer than the edge 8, both of said ed es being straight and disposed in right-angu ar relation to the edge 5. Scales 9, located on the opposite sides of the body, are associated with theedge 5 and extend along the same from the edge 7, terminating short of the edge 8. Other scales 10, in like manner located on opposite sides of the body, .are associated with the curved edge 6 and terminate short of the end edge 8. Scales 11 are associated with the end edge 7 and are located on opposite sides of the body, these scales extending from the longitudinal straight edge 5. Scales 12 are associated with the straight end edge 8 and are designated in consecutive even numbers, as shown.

In the larger end of the body is formed a curved opening 13, the inner curved edge 14 of which constitutes a neck curve guide,

which is preferably designated as shown. In

the narrower portion of the body is formed an opening 15, having right-an ularly disposed edges 16 and a curved edge 17,'constituting an arm-scye-drafting guide, this edge being also designated as shown. In the smaller end of the body is formed a trans-' versely-disposed slot or opening 18, one end of which is provided withan angular offset 19, constituting a sight-opening in which the dots or points of the pattern may be seen. One edge 20 of this opening is slightly curved, as shown, and constitutes a draftingguide for the pattern of the back of the neck. Scales 21, located on opposite sides of the body, are associated withthis edge 20 and extend from the offset 19 to the opposite end of the opening 18 each scale including a consecutive series of even numerals. On one side of the body is a waist-measure scale 22, which scale is located lon itudinally along the scale 9 and is desi nate as shown at 23.

In practice each sca e is divided into quarter-inches, and the designations thereon are all well known to the art. The device set forth is capable of use for drafting practically all the curves and making the measurements necessary in the dressmakers art and tailors art, the scales and curves being, furthermore, so designated that while either side of the body may be used there is no necessity of repeatedly reversing said body or making confusing changes. Moreover, not only are the different featuers designated by name, I

but are preferably numbered, as shown, so that they may be readily identified, and thus the device is applicable for advantageous use in connection with written and printed lessons.

From theforegoing it is thought that the ICC scribed, comprising a body having a straight and a curved edge, scales associated with certain of the edges, said body being provided with a.transverselydisposed opening contiguous to one end, one of the edges of said opening constituting a neck-drafting guide, said opening having at one end an angular offset that extends toward one end of the body and forms a sight-opening, and a scale located along the guideway and terminating at the offset.

2. A drafting implement of the class described, comprising a body having a straight and a curved edge, scales located on the body and associated with the edges, said body being provided with transversely-disposed openings at its opposite ends, said openings having different radii, one of the openings having an angular offset at one end that extends toward one end of the body, and a scale located along one of the edges of one of the trans,- verse openings.

3. A drafting implement of the class described comprising a flat body-plate having a straight and a curved longitudinal edge and straight substantially parallel end-edges, one of said end edges being'longer than the other, scales located on both faces of the bodyplate and associated with the different edges, said body having in one end a curved opening, one of the edges of which constitutes a drafting-guide, said body vbeing also provided with another opening having substantially right-angular edges and a curved edge, said curved edge also constituting a draftingguide, the body being furthermore provided with a transversely-disposed opening having an angular offset at one end, one of the edges of the opening being curved and constituting a drafting-guide, and a scale located along said curved edge.
