L. CO T-mm I CYLINDER FOR INTERNALCQMBUSTION E NGlNjS.
APPLICATIQON FILEDINQV. 20. 1911.

I; w KGEO CYLINDER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
mea er.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. a, 11919.
Application filed November'20, 1917. Serial No. 203,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS COATALEN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Wolverhampton, Stall'ordshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinders for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the production of a light cylinder for internal combustion engines. cylinder barrel, head, and water jacket are cast in one piece of aluminium or aluminium alloy, a hard metal liner is inserted in the barrel, and valve seatings are constituted b ferrules screwed into the head.
In the accompanying drawing A is the barrel of a cylinder, B is the head, and C is the water jacket. D is a liner of steel or cast iron, and E are ferrules of bronze or other suitable metal which are machined to form valve seatings. After these ferrules have been screwed into place the surrounding metal is calked over to prevent leakage.
Thus the walls of the combustion chamber are of aluminium, so that the sparking plug ferrules F which screw into them are well cooled and heat is conducted rapidly from the exhaust valves. The ferrule F is of suitable material chosen for heat conductivity and'hardness, and into. which the sparking plug is screwed. The ferrule must be suffi- According to this invention the ciently hard to preserve its thread so as to allow the frequent removal and replacement of the sparking plug.
The liner D is preferably inserted under light pressure after the casting has been expanded by heat in the known manner.
Thus there is little metal other than aluminium or aluminium alloy in the complete cylinder.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a one-piece casting of light metal forming the cylinder barrel, head, and water jacket; a hard metal liner inserted in the barrel; and ferrules screwed into the head to form valve seatings.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a one-piece casting of light metal forming the cylinder barre-l, head, and water jacket; a hard metal liner inserted in the barrel; ferrules screwed into the head to form valve seatings; and'a hard metal ferrule inserted in the wall of the barrel and 7 hard metal liner to take a sparking plug.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS COATALEN.
Witnesses V. M. ILIFF, M. JONES.
