To all whom it may concern:
resident of Wolverhampton, in'the county of Stafiord, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and has for its object to provide a simple construction which is light, and in which the number of large castings or parts is reduced to a minimum.
According to this invention, the water jacket of aluminium alloy is formed integral with part of the crank chamber and inside this is fitted a liner of cast iron, steel, or other suitable material, and to the water jacket is attached a cylinder head casting r of aluminium alloy which carries the cam shaft or cam shafts, valves, valve seatings, and the gas passages. Preferably the liner is flanged at its upper end and the flanges are gripped between suitable surfaces on the head and jacket.
The accompanying drawing is a central vertical section showing how the invention may be carried into effect.
As will be seen, the upper part A of the crank chamber, which is constructed of cast aluminium alloy, is extended up to form a complete water jacket the walls of which are shown at B these being joined together at B The casting constituted by the parts A B may include any suitable number of cylinders in line, and to it is bolted a separate cylinder head casting C also of aluminium alloy, which is provided with a water jacket C Into the jacket portion B fits, for each cylinder, a liner D of cast iron, steel or other suitable metal and this is flanged at D the flange being gripped between the head and the upper edge B? of the jacket. Any suitable packing material or a gasket E may be used and the water jacket of 'fihe-head may connect with the cylinder water jacket in any Well known manner.v
The valves F seat upon detachable seating rings G which screw into the head casting, though they may be fixed in other ways. These seating rings may be of steel, bronze or other suitable material and it will be seen that the gas passages H are also formed in the head casting. Loose bushes J are imeamatcomw nfq misfits.-

o mama "sen l'na. is es fixed in casting and serve as guides for the" valve stems; *and suitable bear ings are provided for the cam shafts K. The cams K actuate the valves through rockers L which are pivoted either to the wall 0 of the head casting or to the detachable cover 7 plates M thereon. Preferably the walls C extend up to the point C so as to inclose the cam shafts on the outer side and serve to catch oil. A similar wall may extend up on the inside, but preferably there is employed .i separate cover plate N with its walls N extending down and serving to inclose the cam shafts on the inner side. The aperture N serves for access to the spark ing plugs which are located centrally between the two valves. 1
By this means the engine construction is greatly simplified as there are only two main castings B and C of any size, the crank chamber and cylinder water jacket forming one, and the head carrying practically all the valve mechanism constituting the other. Previously where there has been used one casting of aluminium alloy combining the main or cylinder water jacket and the upper part of the crank chamber, and a detachable head casting, the latter has been made of cast iron or similar material, with the result that the joint between the head and the upper surface of the cylinder casting was liable to become very hot and more over the two castings expanded difierently, having different co-efticients of expansion. By the present invention the expansion of the two parts is similar and the engine is much lighter. As the flange D on the liner is gripped between two cooled aluminium surfaces, it is prevented from becoming very aluminium alloy, cam shafts carried by said head, valves in said head, and separate valve seatings insertible into said head from below and fixed thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the
Elli:
combination of a complete Water jacket of aluminium alloy, a crank chamber part integral therewith, a separate liner in said j aeket, a cylinder head casting of aluminium alloy, cam shafts carried by said head, "alves in said head, separate valve seatings fixed to said head, walls extending above said cam shafts, cover plates in said Walls, rockers pivoted to said cover plates, and a cover plate, between said cam shafts with a central aperture therein, substantially as set forth. 1
, In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
