ENGINE-CYLINDER.
Be it knbwn that I, ALBERT BIE, a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway, residing in Winterthur, "Switzerland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Engine- Cylinders. .a This invention is an improvement 1n- 1ny tcrnal4 combustion engine cylinders and is concerned more especially with the structure of the head4 or inner ends thereof, the object being to provide a construction whereby i Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through 'the water-cooling of the head may be more effective, which renders vthe cooling space Aaccessible for cleaning and permits of replacement of the part exposed to. combustion, .andv which is in general well adapted .to withstand thestrains to which this por` "tion ofthe cylinder is subjected.
In the accompanying drawings illustratthe head portion of an internal combustion engine; and f Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The' invention .is designed more particu-v larly for internal combustion engines of the Diesel type, and it may be'understood that the drawing represents a cylinder of an engine of this character. lThe body of the cylinder may be cast in one piece, or, asv
shown, composed of an inner section a, in which the p1stonoperates, and a separate outer jacket part a inclosing a water 0001-'4 f ing space in the lateral wall of the cylinder.
A head member d is separate from both portions of the cylinder body and is united thereto by bolts L, which pass throughthe head into the part a', the part a being held in place by a iiange u'which rests on a shoul -dero on the jacket. The head member is a casting made with an appropriate space or spaces c', 7c in its interior for circulation of cool/ing water, to reduce. the temperature'of the part forming the'end wall of thel comlbustion chamber b, and with valve sockets g extending through the cooling spaces for the reception of the housings of valves 1' and s, which may be, respectively, a fuel-atomizing valve and an air-startingvalve, the air for scavenging or combustion being admitted through another valve in the head br through-lateral ports, not shown. In the preferred form of the invention the cooling spaces c', 'lc are separated by an inner trans- Speciication of Letters Patent.

an exceptionally strong trusscd construction is secured and a favorable utilization of the cooling water made possible, in addition to the other advantages enumerated herein-` after.
The inner side of the head, which is left open in the casting, is covered by a separate' plate c, smaller in diameter than the head,
constituting part of the inclosure of the cooling space i and dividing the same from the combustion chamber. This plate is provided with openings c and f for` the valves and is held at its circumference by the pressure of the bolts t between an annular flange orshoulder t on the head and the part a of the cylinder body, where a recess and en'- gaging lrib vare provided for securing av compression-tight joint for the' ,combustion chamber. In addition to the support thus afforded, the plate is sustained inwardly of its circumference against the pressure in the combustion chamber bythe inner p0rtions of the valve sockets g, which project within the space c' so that their ends lie substantially ina plane with the flange t. The said 'flange is located somewhat above the lower end ofthe encircling side wall of the head, thereby forming an' internal rabbet which with the upper end of the cylinder part a constitutes an annular recess or groove wherein the plate is held, the plate being somewhat smaller in diameter than the recess as indicated, so as to permit of radial eXpan- A sion of the plate relative to the head and cylinder body. The plate c being a separate part can be finished 0H smooth on its internal suri face, which promotes cooling, since it minimizes the opportunity for adhesion of scale and steam bubbles and enables the water to keep the surface washed clean. Furthermore, the cooling space in the head is rendered easily accessible and the vexpense of repairs isreduced, since in event of deterioration of the wall at theend of the combustion chamber'the same can be removed and replaced by' another. Finally the construction enables this wall to be made of special material selected with a view to resisting the conditions of heat and pressure to which it is subjected. The sockets g for thevalves of the cylinder head may also be made in one piece with the plate c and the ends of the sockets may have bearing against the cylinder head.
-It will be understood that the drawing does 2. In an internal combustion engine cylinder, the combination with a head member hollow for the circulation of coolingwater and open at its inner side, the said head member being formed with an encircling side wall having an internal rabbet, of a separate plate seated at its outer portion in said rabbet and covering said inner side of the head member and separating the cooling space therein from the combustion space.
3. In an internal combustion engine cylinder, the combination with a cylinder body anda separate cylinder head secured to the cylinder body, the head and body being formed to inclose between them an internal annular recess, the latter being hollow for the circulation of cooling water, of a part interposed betweensaid body and head and closing off the interior of the head from the combustion space, the said part being of smaller diameter than the head and received at its circumferential portion in said recess.
42111 an internal combustion engine, a cylinder body and a cylinder head member containing a cooling space open at its inner side, in combination with a separate part closing the inner side of said head member and held adjacent its circumference between the same and the cylinder body, the head member having projections in its cooling space affording shoulders against which said part bears inwardly of its circumference.
5. In an internal combustion engine cylinder,.the combination with a head formed 4with a cooling space and valve sockets extending through said cooling space, of a plate closing said cooling space off from the combustion space and having bearing against thel inner projecting ends of said valve sockets. v j

7. In an internal combustion engine cyl-- inder the combination of` a cylinder body, a hollow water-cooled head, and an interposed removable part constituting the inner wall of the cooling space inthe head, the said part having a rib on its inner side entering a groove in the end of the cylinder body for the production of a compression tight joint.
. 8. In an internal combustion engine, a gg cylinder head comprising a hollow casting containing a cooling space, vsaid casting bei `ing open at the inner side, in combination with a separate inner portion applied against the openend of thecasting and havg5 ing an internal surface finished off smooth to be washed by the cooling water.
l9. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder body, a hollow water-cooled head, and a plate forming the 9o end wall of the combustion chamber,l the said plate beingmounted in a recess between a the head and 4body and being capable of ra-4 dial expansion therein relative to said parts.
10. An internal combustion engine cylina5 der having a body, a separate outer watercooled head, an interposed removable part closing the inner side of the water space of 4the head and constituting the end wall of the combustion space, and means whereby 10e said part is held in place with freedom for radial expansion relative to the .other parts.
11. In` an internal combustion engine, the
-combination of an outer cylinder part, aV
hollow'head bolted thereto, said head and 105 outer body part having internal ledges, an inner cylinder part, and a' removable plate closing the inner side of the head, said inner cylinder partnand said 'plate-being held by and between said internal ledges.
' 12. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with a wall forming the end of the combustion space, of a hollow watercooled'head having a transverse inner wall and valve sockets united with said wall and' 115 with an outer part of the head and bearing at their inner ends as supports against the end wall ofthe combustion space.
13. In an internal combustion engine, the I combination with a'cylinden of a hollow 12o water-cooled head member, and a separate v plate confined at its outer edge between the head member and cylinder and closing off the end of the combustion space from the water-cooling space in the head, said head member being of unit construction compris' in outer and inner l,transverse walls and a sie wall and valve sockets uniting thetransverse walls, the inner ends of the valve y sockets projecting beyond the inner transverse Wall and ai'ording support to the interior part of the plate.
