Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March a, 1915. Serial No. 12,743.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BIE, a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway, residing in Winterthur, Switzerland, have invented the following-described new and useful Improvement in Engine-Cylinders.
This invention relates to cylinder construction for internal combustion engines, and is concerned particularly with the heads thereof, being .designed more especially,
- though not necessarily exclusively, for constant pressure oil engines having their fuel injection valves arranged centrally in the heads. The object is to provide a construction of head suitable for these, and other,
engines which affords accessto the cooling space in the head, simplifies repair, reduces expansion strains, and improves the cooling.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the head and adjacent portion of the body of the cylinder;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the head, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a head with a slightly modified construction;
The drawing shows a cylinder of a Diesel engine comprising a body 6 having a watercooling space in its wall, and a hollow head a formed separately from the body and also containing a water-cooling space 112... Within the cylinder between the head and the piston p is the combustion-chamber 7", its
sizevaryingaccording to the position of the piston.
The head is in this instance provided with three valve sockets 0, e and f passing through the cooling space m, the socket 0 being central and preferably separate from the head and the sockets e and f at opposite sides being preferably integral. The socket or tube 0 is received in an opening 9 in the top of the head and contains a fuel injection valve, which comprises a housing or casing .9, containing a valve propert, the device being of known character, operating to atomize and inject the oil into the combustion chamber by a blast of air. under high pressure when the part t is unseated. The interiors of the sockets e and f are designed to receive combustion air and starting air valves, w and 2 respectively, and terminate in openings 0 and d through the inner wall 4) of the head, which wall partlally separates the cooling space m in the head from the valve delivers the atomized fuel into the compressed air in the cylinder. In order to admit the fuel the closure piece is formed withacentral aperture is, preferably flared toward the combustion chamber, as shown.
In the embodiment of the invention shown. in Figs. 1 and 2 the piece Z has a boss to pro jecting inwardly of the head and screwed firmly at a to the socket 0, the outer portion of the piece bearing tightly against the wall v,- but instead of being screwed only centrally the closure piece may be fastened at more than one point if desired. As shown, the said piece is not only retained by the fuel valve socket, but also serves to hold the latter in position by drawing a flange or shoulder h thereon against the upper part of the head. v
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 8 the boss on carries a which is fastened with bolts b against the socket 0.
The closure piece is readily replaced in event of injury, may be made of specially resisting material, and the fact of its being free for radial expansion materially reduces the heat tension in the head. It also affords access to the interior of the head, for clearing the same of accumulations, and being a separate piece may be finished ofl' smooth on the inside surface, thereby rendering the cooling more effective by lessening the possibility of adhesion of scale and steam bubbles at the region of most intense heat and consequently greatest likelihood of formation of deposits.
It will be understood that the drawing does not purport to show features and details unessential to the invention, and that,
for example, wherever joints should be made tight in practice the usual expedients may be resorted to in actual construction.
I claim:
1. In an internal combustion engine cylin- .der, a hollow water-cooled cylinder head I bustion-chamber ace of said wall.
containing a fuel injection valve casing and having an inner wall ,with a centralopening around said casing and a removable" cover for said'opening, this cover being smallerin diameter than the end of the combustion chamber and bein applied against thecom- 2. In an internal combustion engine, a
- cylinder having a hollow water-cooled head provided with-an opening through its inner wall, and a separate piece applied to the inner side of the head closing said opening and free fromthe sides of the cylinder, said piece being secured at its central region and being free to expand radially.
3. In an internal combustion engine, a hollow Water-cooled cylinder head-having a fuel valve socket passing through the cooling space in its mterior, said head being formed with an inner wall separating said cooling space from ,the combustion space and provided with a central opening through said wall around said valve socket, anda around the. socket and itself separate small cover' closing the opening provided with an opening for the admission offuel.
'4. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder head hollow for circulation of cool- 'ing water, a hollow valve-containing memer passing through the head, and a separate removable piece closing ofi the cooling space in the hea from the combustion space and held in place by fastening means engaging 'said valve-containing member.-
.5. In .an internal combustion engine, a
7 cylinder head containinga cooling space valve-containin' member passin #Q-Said space with its inner end standing in said opening with an opening in its wall adjacent the end of the'com ustlon chamber, a separate hollow through and a closure plate for sald'opening united toward its center with the valvecontaining member and free for radial expansion.
6. In an internal combustion engine, a I
- combustion-chamber freedom for radial expansion and formlng f. neonate:
cylinder head containing a cooling space and having an inner wallprovided with an opening, a separate hollow'va'lve-containing member passin through the head, and an aper tured smal cover for said opening fastened to said valve member, whereby both the cover and the, valve-contaming member are a closure between said cooling spaceand the combustion space around the fuel valve.
8.- In an internal combustion engine, a
cylinder having a head containing a space for circulation of cooling water, a valve socket passing through said cooling space,'
the head having an inner wall formed with an opening around said socket, and a closure for said opening fixed to said socket and at its surface adjacent its outer edge bearing against the inner side of the head with freedom to move thereon.
- 9. In an internal combustion engine, a'
hollow Water-cooled head containing a plurality of valve sockets and having an inner wall formed with an opening around 'one of the sockets, piece centrally aperturedand applied to-the inner face of the head closing said opening, thedther valve sockets opening through the and a separate small cover inner wall beyond the edge of 'saidicover piece. v
Intestimony -whereof, I'have signed this specification inthe presence of two witnesses. 3.
