MICHAEL JOSEPH WEBB, 0F KINGSTOWN, IRELAND.
NEEDLE-THREADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed December 22, 1916. Serial No. 138,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. WEBB, a subject of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 16 Corrig avenue, Kingstown, in the county of Dublin, Ireland, have invented a new and Improved Needle- Threader, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the class of needlethreaders having a butt end provided with a longitudinal wedge-shaped slit to receive a thread. The specific construction of my device is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which it is represented in plan view. 7
The elongated body A of my improved needle-threader is constructed of a thin, narrow plate of metal, or other suitable material, one end being pointed and the other B, provided with a longitudinal slit which tapers uniformly from the outer to the inner end having a transverse eye midway of its length. By this construction opposite jaws are formed, the same having a certain degree of elasticity and being rounded or formed on outwardly diverging, curved lines, as shown. It is obvious that the extension of the slit inward beyond the eye increases the clasticity of the jaws.
It will be understood that the device is made of various sizes to adapt it for use with needles having eyes of diiferent diameters.
In practical use, a thread is laid between the curved convex ends of the jaws and pressed or drawn into and along the slit and thus into the eye, the elasticity of the jaws permitting them to yield slightly so that the operation is easily and quickly effected. Thus the device is ready for threading needles with convenience and despatch.
I claim:
The device as herein characterized consisting of an elongated fiat strip pointed at one end and having the butt end slitted longitudinally, the side walls of the slit tapering uniformly inwardly to form an extremely narrow crotch portion, said slit producing resilient arms at the butt end of the threader, the said tapering walls of the slit having opposing complementary semi-circular notches intermediate their inner and outer extremities, whereby the resiliency of the aforesaid arms is increased, the resilient arms adapted to tightly grip a thread at the crotch portion, whereby the entire strip with its thread may be passedthrough the eye of a needle to thread the same.
Dated this 4th day of December 1916.
