To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT C." HOWELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tag- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tag holders and has as its object to provide a device of this class which may be readily, quickly and securely connected with a package, wrapped or tied, with bolts of cloth, and with various articles having a cloth or paper wrapping or in themselves of sheet material. or tied or secured by means of cord or the like.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the device that when applied to a bolt of cloth or the wrapping of an article or bundle, it will not be liable to injure the cloth or wrapping, although adapted to be securely connected or engaged therewith. In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the device connected with the string or cord which is tied about a package to be identified.

The device embodying the present invention consists, briefly stated, of a shank or stem which is provided at one end with means for connection either with a tying cord or string or for engagement with a piece of cloth or other sheet material, and

indicates one section of the shank the length of wire comprising. the same being bent at one end to form an eye 2 and at its other end being bent at right angles to its length as indicated at 3 and thence laterally as indicated at 4. The wire is then bent back upon its portion 4 asindicated at 5 and the portion 5 is preferably of a length substantially equal to twice thelength of the portion 4 so that in effect the section 1 is provided at its last mentioned. end with a transverse bar laterally o-li -set with respect to'the end of the said section by reason of the fornn'ition of the bend 3. The other section of the/device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed from a single length of wire bent upon itself to form a portion '6 and. a portion 7. The portion 6 is of less length than the portion 7 and at its end opposite the bend between the. said portions is bent to forman eye 8 which is pivotally engaged with the eye 2 in the manner clearly shown in the said figures. The bendv between the portions 6 and 7 is indicated by the numeral 9 and the wire at the saidibend is preferably filed or otherwise pointed as indicated at 10, sothat the last described section of the device may be inserted through a piece of sheet material such as;cloth or paper. From a point substantially opposite the eye 8 the portion 7 of the said second'mentioned section is flattened as indicated at 11 to its free extremity.
F or'a purpose to be presently explained the ortions '6 and 7 of the second described sectlon of the device are preferably slightly curved from end to end. In applying the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings-to a package or bundle which is tied by means of a string or' cord as for example as indicated by the numeral 12 in Fig. 1, some portion of the cord is" engaged between'the portions 6 and 7 of the device and the flattened portion 11 is then twisted spirally about the portion 1 in the manner shown in the said figure, this portion 11 being rendered pliable by reason of its flattened form. Prior to connecting the device to the cord 12 the device in the formshown in Fig. 2 is inserted through the eye 13 of the card or tag .package, the pointed end 10 is caused to pierce the material and the device is then threaded through the opening thus formed until the end of the portion 11 has passed through the material. The member comprising the portions 6 and 7 is then turned to occupy a position transversely of the end of the portion 1 and the portion 1 is drawn or retracted until the said section comprising the portions 6 and 7 is engaged snugly against the inner face of the wrapping.
The device shown in Figs. 3, 41: and 5 of the drawings is formed from a single length of wire comprising a shank portion 15 which at one end is bent to substantially annular form as at 16 and has its terminal portion bent to extend radially so as to form a head corresponding to the head formed at the end of the section 1 of the previously described form of the device. The Wire comprising the device is bent upon itself as at 19 and the bend is pointed as indicated at 20 and for the same purpose as previously described concerning the bend 9. The bend 19 results in portions 21 and 22 which occupy substan tially the same relative positions as the portions 6 and 7 and these said portions 21 and 22 are correspondingly curved as are the portions 6 and 7 so that the device may be more conveniently inserted through a sheet of material to which it is to be applied. The portion 22 is flattened from about its middle to its free extremity as indicated at 23 and this flattened portion corresponds to the portion 11 previously described. The portion 22 is given a bend about the portion 15 substantially at the juncture of the portions 22 and 23 as indicated at 24. When the device is to be applied to a tying cord as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the portions 21 and 22 are engaged with the cord and the portion 23 is then bent spirally about the shank portion 15 as shown in the said figure. When the device is to be applied to a piece of cloth or connected to the wrapping of a bundle orpackage, its end 20 is inserted through the said piece of cloth or wrapping material and after the portion 23 has passed through the material the shank of the device is bent at the point of engagement of the bend 2 i'therewith and as indicated at 25 in Fig. 5 of the drawings and the device is then secured in place.
While the flattened portions 11 and 23, by reason of their flattened condition, may be more readily bent about the shanks land 15 respectively, the said portions 11 and 23 may be left in their original condition or, in other words, circular in cross section.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described including a shank arranged at one end to hold a tag or the like, and including spaced portions formed by bending the shank upon itself, the shank at the said bend being provided with an entering point and one of the said portions being pliable.
2. A device of the class described including a shank arranged at one end to hold a tag or the like and being curved adjacent its other end and bent upon itself to form spaced portions, the bend in the shank being acute and pointed-whereby to be readily insertible through a sheet of material.
8. A device of the class described including a shank arranged at one end. to hold a tag or the like and being curved adjacent its other end and bent upon itself to form spaced portions, the bend in the shank being acute and pointed whereby to be readily insertible through a sheet of material, one of the said spaced portions having a pliable terminal.
