The invention relates to an improved 'device for speedily tying the ends of yarn or thread together, and 15 particularly adapted for use b the operators 0 oubling, twisting, spoo ing, winding and similar machines.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which can be conveniently supported upon the fingers ofthe o erator and which is provided with means or cuttin the ends of the yarn, after the knot is tie into uniform lengths as well as to any desired length.

Another object of the invention consists in providing a device of this character with removable cuttin means.

To these ends t e invention consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved knot-tier in one broken ends of the yarn in the other nd, the knot-tier being in its first position upon the yarn. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the second position of the knot-tier with the yarn looped around the same. Fig.3 is a similar view illustrating the third position of the knot-tier with the yarn in position for the loop to be slipped off of the knot-tier. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the first position of the knot-tier after the loop has been slipped off of the end thereof and the knot completed; Fig. 5 is a front view of my improved knot-tier in its referred form. Referring to Fig. 5, 1 represents the body portion of the knot-tier which is formed Stout of a iece of flat steel into a suitable 1 shape to t comfortably in the hand of the operator. 4 and 5 and a rounded end portion 6, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. That part of the body portion 1 in which the opening 3 is formed is bent into a concave-convex form as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. Removably mounted in a suitable slot in the end portion 6 is a knife 8 which extends into the outer end of the opening 3 and is provided with a circular cutting edge 9 upon one side thereof. The manner in which the device is used will now be described, reference being had to Figs..1, 2, 3, and 4: of the drawings. The knot-tier is-held in the right hand, the little finger passing through the ring 2. The broken ends of the yarn 13 are now taken by the fingers of the right hand and passed over the thumb and first finger of the left hand and gripped by the remaining fingers of said left hand. The knot-tier is then placed upon that portion of the yarn 13 which passes from the thumb to the first finger, as shown in Fig. 1. 4 and 5 toward the rec end of the tier. -As said loop passes up on to the raised portion 11 of the side portion 4 it clears the free end of the knife .8v and is free to pass entirely off of the knot-tier and form the knot, as shown in Fig. 4. After the knot has been formed the knot-tier is given a quick forward rotary movement and the waste ends of the yarn 13 are severed by means of the cutting edge 9 and the knot completed.

As will be seen, the length of the ends of the yarn after the knot is completed depends upon the distance from the cutting edge 9 to the outer edge of the side portion 4 at the point where the knot lies when the yarn is severed, so that by making the knife 8 wider and its cutting edge nearer the inner edge of the side portion 5, the length of the ends of the yarn will be increased. Thus by varyin the Width of the knife 8 the length oft e ends of the yarn when the knot is completed may be varied as desired.

Fig. 7 shows a modified form of the knottier m which the knife 8' is made from a. round, instead of from a flat, piece of stock, inwhich case the knife is mounted and secured in a hole, instead of a slot, in the end portion 6. The cutting edge 9 in this form is considerably shorter than in the preferred form shown in Fig. 5, but it is suflicientl lon for fine yarns.

at I claim-as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A device of the character described comprising a flat body portion having one end provided with a longitudinally extendin .bend and a knife removably mounted in said bent portion.

2. A device of the character described comprising a flat body portion, an elongated inclosed opening adjacent one end and a knife removably-mounted in one end of said body portion and having the free end thereof extending into said opening.

3. A device of the character described comprisin a flat body portion provided with an e ongated longitudinal dpening and a bend adjacent one end, and a knife removably mounted in said body portion and having the free end thereof extending into the outer end of said elongated opening.

4. A device of the character described comprising a-flat body portion, a knife provided with a cutting edge on one side, a low part in the bod 4 portion adjacent the cutting ed e of said ife, and a raised part in the body portion adjacent the opposite edge of said knife.

5. A device of the character described comprising a flat body portion provided with an elongated longitudinal opening and a bend adjacent one end, a knife removably mounted in the end of said body portion and having the free end thereof extending intosaid'long tudinal opening, means for holding the knife in said end portion, araised portion upon one side of said opening opposite the free end of said knife and a low portion upon the other side of said opening opposite the free end of said knife.
