THREAD-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed April 2, 1914. Serial No. 829,124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA MAGGIE FORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glidden, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented certain new arid useful Improvements in Thread-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for holding, guiding and tensioning the spool thread when weaving or knitting such work at tatting, laces and the like.
WVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the thread holder applied to use, and,
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged side elevation thereof, and,
Fig. 3 represents a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a band or ring of annular formation and of proper size to fit the second joint of the little finger as illustrated in Fig. 1. The band 5 is preferably bent from a single piece of material and the adjacent ends, reduced in thickness and suitably secured together. The outer or overlapped end 6 is formed with a pair of ears 7 which extend axially from the side edges of the ring and which are preferably of semi-circular formation, as shown in Fig. 2, and formed with a plurality of apertures or openings. The ears 7 are alined and curved in the direction of the curvature of the ring, and they are located wholly within the plane of that portion of the ring from i which they extend.
Each ear 7 is formed with a pair of large openings 8 and a pair of small openings 9 arranged outwardly of the small openings 8. The large openings are adapted to receive heavy or coarse thread and the small openings 9 are adapted to receive finer threads.
In use, the ring or thread holder 5 is slipped over the little finger of the left hand of the operator, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the spool thread 10 threaded in and out of either the large openings or the set of small openings. The ring is positioned on the middle section of the little finger with the ears located at the back of the finger, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The ears extend longitudinally of the finger. In view thereof, in view of their curvature, and as they are located in the plane of that part of the ring from which they extend, the ears cannot be engaged by the free runs of the thread during the tatting operation. Owing to the width of the ring, the ears are, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, positioned longitudinally beyond the first and second joints of the finger, and as the first and third sections of the finger may be bent partly away from the ears, the thread will not engage and injure such sections as it is being pulled through the ears during the tatting operation. If found necessary or desirable to increase the tension on the thread, the first and third sections of the finger may be moved so as to clamp the thread between such sections and ears with any desired pressure. The part of the thread 10 between the ring 5 and the work 11 is accurately held in proper position and under proper tension, thus leaving the fingers of the operator practically free.
What I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a thread holder consisting of a relatively wide ring having an ear projecting axially from each side edge thereof, said ears being alined and curved in the direction of the curvature of the ring and located wholly within the plane of that portion of the ring from which they project, each ear being provided with openings of different sizes, and said ears being adapted to extend longitudinally of the finger to which the article is applied.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMMA M. FORT.
