ADJUSTABLE STAGING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL Eenno BAP- TISTA, a subject of Portugal, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Stagings, of which the following is a specification.
My inventicin has reference to an improvement in building appliances and more particularly to an improvement in individual adjustable stagings-or scalfoldlngs, for use painting and washing the windows of buildings.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable staging that can easily be handled by one man, that can easily and quickly be adjusted and attached to or detached from the window of a building and that can be separated and formed into a comparatively light and compact bundle for carrying, packing or for storage purposes.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of an adjustable staging for individual use, said adjustable staging having details of construction, as .will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical view of the wall of a building, in section and showing my im proved staging secured to a window-frame in a raised position, in full lines and in a lower position in broken lines.
' Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the window-frame looking down on the staging, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View of one of the inner clamping ends of the staging.
In the drawings 4 indicates a portion of the wall of a building in section, 5 a win dow-frame having the sides 6, 6, 7 the window-sill, 8 the outer window-cap and 9 my improved adjustable staging, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The staging 9 consists principally when set up, of two parallel horizontal platform bars 10, 10 adjustably connected at their outer ends by a transverse rod 11 and two angular parallel brace bars 12, 12 adjustably connected at their lower ends by a transverse rod 13. The horizontal platform bars 10, 10 each have a series of bolt holes 14, 14 adjacent their outer ends and the brace bars 12, 12 each have a corresponding series of bolt holes 14, 14 adjacent their outer ends. The horizontal platform and truss Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 23, 1918. Serial No. 218,840. I
bars are pivotally and adjustably secured together adjacent their outer ends by bolts 15 passed through any desired pairs of holes 14 in the bars 10, the bolts being retained by thumb-nuts 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The transverse rods 11 and 13 are each screw-threaded at their ends the required length for adjustment and are adjustably secured to the bars, through holes in the bars, by thumb- nuts 16, 16 on the rods, one thumb-nut at each side of a bar, as shown in Fig. 2. I
A clamping member 17 is formed on the inner end of each of the horizontal platform bars 10, 10. Each clamping member 7 is constructed to have a part 18 which bears against the outer face of the windowframe 5, a part 19 which lays against the runway of the window-frame and a part 20 parallel with the inner face of the window-frame and offset from the windowframe. A bolt slot 21 is formed in the part 19 and a clamping plate 22 bears against the inner face of the windowframe. The clamping plate 22 has an L shaped end 23 which grips the inner edge of the window frame and a screw-threaded stem 24 which extends through the slot 21 in the part 19 and is adjustably secured in place by a thumb-nut 25 which bears against the outer face of the part 19. Two thumb- bolts 26, 26 are screw-threaded through the part 20 and bear at their inner ends against the clamping plate 22 and an intermediate coiled spring 27 bears at one end on the part 20 and at its other end on the clamping plate 22, the spring pressure of the coiled spring 27 holding the clamping plate 22 in frictional contact .with the window-frame, under spring pressure. I
In setting up the staging, the staging is adjusted for width, by adjusting the bars on the rods and the lower ends of the brace bars 12, 12 are placed on the window-sill and the clamping members 17, 17 placed around the Window-frame, the friction of the spring actuated clamping plates 22, 22 on the window-frame being sufficient to hold the staging in place while adjusting the staging for height. When the required height is obtained, by raising or lowering the clamping members 17, 17 on-the windowframe, the thumb- nuts 25, 25 and the thumbbolts 26, 26 are tightened, thereby rigidly securing the staging to. the window-frame. Boards are now laid across the horizontal platform bars 10, 10 to form a platform 01151 the staging, as shown in broken lines in Figs. 1 and 2. r
The staging is adjustable forheight and width, it may be detachably secured to a window-frame and sill, as shown in full lines in Fig. l or it may be secured to the window frame and the window cap of a lower window as shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 and when taken apart it can be formed into a comparatively small and light bundle, for carrying or for storage purposes.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new:
1. In an adjustable staging having two parallel platform bars and two parallel bracebars pivotally secured to the platform bars, means for frictionally attaching and means for adjustably clamping the inner ends of the platform bars to a window-frame consisting of a clamping member on the ina ner end of each platform bar, each clamping member having a part which bears against the outer face of the window-frame, a part which bears against the runway of the window-frame, an offset part parallel .with the window-frame, a clamping plate which bears against the inner face of the window-frame and is shaped to grip the edge of the window-frame, thumb-bolts screw-threaded through the offset part and bearing against the clamping plate, an intermediate coiled spring engaging with the offset part and with the clamp ng plate and Copies 01 this patent may be obtained for means for operating the clamping plate to grip the edge of the window-frame.
2. An adjustable staging having the fol lowing instrumentalities, two parallel horizontal platform bars 10, 10, a transverse rod 11 adjustably connected at each end to a platform bar, two parallel brace bars 12, 12, each pivotally and adjustably secured at its outer end to a platform bar, a transverse rod 13 adjustably connected at each end to a brace bar, a clamping member 17 formed on the end of each platform bar, each clamp ing member 17 having a part 18 which bears against the outer face of a window-frame, a part 19 which bears against the runway of the window-frame, an offset part 20 parallel with the inner face of the window-frame, a bolt slot 21 in the part 22 whichbears against the inner face of the window-frame and has an L shaped end 23 which grips the edge of the window-frame and a screw-threaded stem at which extends through the slot 21, a thumb-nut 25 on the screw -threaded stem 2 1, thumb-bolts 26, 2(3 screw-threaded through the part 20 and bearing on the clamping plate 22 and an intermediate coiled spring 27 engaging at one end with the part 20 and at its other end with the clamping plate 22, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
MANUEL EGIDIO BAPTISTA.
