UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
(WILLIAM A. GILLETT, or NION CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCAFFOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,740, dated June 19, 1883.
' Application filed September 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GILLETT, of Union City, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Scaffold, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a scaffold attachment to a ladder or equivalent support, the said ladder having an extension-joint to vary its height, and the scaffold attachment being suspended from the upper end of the ladder, and provided with adjusting and holding apparatus, as hereinafter described, to enable the person on the scaffold to shift his position and secure himself.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sideelevation of my improved scaffold and support, as seen looking from the building. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the scaffold, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, as seen looking along the side of the building.
From the upper end of the extension-section a of a ladder or other rest, I), of similar contrivance to lean against the side of the house, I suspend a hanger, c, from each bar by any suitable eye-joints, (1, making ratchetnotches e in the sides of said hangers that face each other, and on these hangers I fit a strong scaffold plank or platform, f, so as to slide up and down thereon, with the pulley-tackle g for shifting it, and the ratchet-pawls h and z for fastening it in any position, the latter being in the form of bent rods, which branch out each way from the suspending-bars, and connect with the edges of the platform f, so as to The platform has adjustable steady-rests j, bolted onto the under side of it, to be set with the points against the side of thehouse to prevent the platform from swinging. The said points may be armed with stud-pins 70, to penetrate the surface of the siding a little to stay the platform against lateral vibration, and the hangers are stayed by the braces m, attached to the extension at, which are extensible by the clamp-screws Z and the slots n in said braces.
The attachment may be detachably connected to the ladder, so as to be put on and taken off at will to enable the ladder to be used without it when required, and the attachment may be used with a support not having the extension-joint.
The attachment thus contrived will be useful for painters and others requiring to work upon the exterior walls of a building for any purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with ladder-sections a, of the two loosely-suspended hangers c 0, eyejointed to its upper ends, and carrying a vertically adjustable platform, f, adapted to be used as described.
2. The combination, with the Verticallymovable platform f and suspended hangers c c, of the pulleytackles g g, eyejointed to the outside of both the platform and hangers, whereby the platform may be moved up and down with the lower pulleys, as described.
3. The combination, with the inwardlyratcheted hangers c and the platform f, of two pawls, hi, at each end, one catching above and the other below the bar, as described, whereby any accident happening to one pawl will not result in a fall to the workman, and the division of the strain will lessen the likelihood of an accident.
4. The combination of the ratcheted hangers a, platform f, pawls h i, pulleytackle, and the adjustable braces m, with the ladder or equivalent rest, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the hangers c, of the platform f, mortised over the hangers, and the pawls h i, the latter being attached at both sides of the platform, and yoked adjustably over the hc ngers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. a
6. The combination, with the hangers 0, suspended from ladder-sections a, of the slotted braces m, adjustably and detachably secured by screws to both,,to stay the hangers at various points of adjustment, or be taken off al-' together when not needed, as described.
