PORTABLE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed January 31, 1889- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, META LEwIs KING and JAMEs RoswELL KING, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Portable Balconies; and we do hereby declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable balconies of that class which are adapted to be secured to the window-frame, so as to provide a perfectly safe support for a person or persons, thereby providing means by which the outer surfaces of window-frames can be readily reached for washing, painting, glazing, &c., the balcony also being adapted to be used for viewing processions, support for a ladder in case of fire, and other such uses to which the device may be put.

Our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is aview showing the parts folded upon each other.

For the purpose of preventing marring of the window-frame, and to adapt the invention to window-frames of different depths and widths, we use in connection with our improved balcony transverse bars A and B, of a length greater than the width of the window in which the device is to be used. The bar A is provided at its ends with blocks a a, which may be attached thereto, or said blocks may be formed integral with the beam or bar A by having the end of the surface thereof cut away. This bar A is adapted to rest upon the outer sill of the window, its ends extending beyond the sides thereof and resting against the wall of the house. The bar B is merely a straight piece of timber of sufficient.

size and of such length that when in position its ends will rest against the opposite sides of der the cutaway portion of the beam or crossbar A. The upper portionsof these castings have a screw-threaded aperture, f, through which pass rods F, the outer ends of which are threaded, the opposite ends being key-ended and having rigidly attached thereto crankarms E. The rods F lie within suitable recesses in the under side of the sill-pieces. To the rear end of the sill-pieces are attached bands or straps G, the lower ends of which are bent outwardly, so as to lie under the beam or cross-bar B, and upon these straps the heads of the crank-arms E, which are attached to the threaded bars, bear.

At a suitable point near the inner ends of the sill-pieces O are screw-threaded openings h, which are adapted to receive the threaded stems of the thumb-screws H, the stems of these thumb-screws passing through slots in plates I, which extend forwardly, the outer ends thereof being turned upwardly and inwardly to hook over the inner cross-board c of the flooring, whereby the ends of said board may be drawn and held snugly against the Wall of the house on each side of the window.

To the corners of the floor of the balcony or platform are hinged the side frames, K K, which side frames are held in a vertical position when raised by a rod, it, having downwardly-turned ends, which enter eyes adapted to receive said ends.

To attach our improved balcony to a window-frame, the bars A and B are placed in posit-ion and the crank-handles turned to draw upon the castings e e sufficiently to prevent the beams falling. The slatted floor of the platform is then placed upon the sills, so that the strap I will engage and overlap the edge of one of the bottom boards, after which the straps I are moved inward to draw the inner board of the flooring against the wall of the house, and the thumb -screw is tightened. Now by further turning the crank-handles the beams A and B will be drawn toward each other to tightly clamp against the windowframe, so that the outer end of the sill-pieces cannot be depressed, and the device will be practically immovable and rigid with the window-frame until the cranlcarms are turned to loosen the parts.

\Ve are aware that prior to our invention it has been proposed to provide folding and adjustable scaffolds which could be applied to window-frames, and we do not claim such construction, broadly; but

\Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The window-balcony herein described, consisting of the sill-pieces O C, grooved longitudinally on their under edges, said sillpieccs being provided with downwardly-extending straps having outwardly-bent ends, through which straps passes a screw-threadcd rod, which engages with a movable casting, c, said sill-pieces being provided on their upper edges with slotted straps having upwardly and inwardly bent ends, and a set-screwpassing through the slcts in said straps to engage with the sill-pieces, the parts being organized substantially as shown, whereby the sill-pieces can be attached to a window-frame and support a balcony rigidly thereon.

2. In combination with a balcony having a rigid removable floor made up of transverse slats, sill-pieces G, carrying on their upper edges adjustable straps I, which are adapted to clamp the floor of the balcony, the outer and inner beams, A and B, and screw-rods to clamp said beams in a window, substantially as shown, and for the.purpose set forth.
