LADDER AND SCAFFOLD SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,427, dated March 15, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THoRN CoPEMAN, a citizen of Canada, residing at Essex, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canad a, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder and Scafiold Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined ladder and scaffold support more especially designed for the use of builders, painters, &c., and has for its object the making of a cheap, simple, and compact support which may be readily adjusted and securely held in any of its adjusted positions and which at the same time shall be of such size as to render its portability easy and convenient.

To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l a perspective view of my improved I scaffold-support in use; Fig.2, a vertical central section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the supporting-ladder, showing the detachable base; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of adjustable spacing bar or brace.

In the drawings, 1- represents the side rails of a ladder, and 2 the rounds thereof. The lower ends of the ladder are detachably secured to a widened base portion 3 of the ladder by clips 4, pivotally secured to the adja cent members and adapted to slip over the sharpened end of the opposing member, as shown.

The spacing bar or brace 5 is adapted to slide upon the side rails of the upright ladder and space the same from the building the desired distance, said spacing-bar being composed of a strut 6, split at one end and spread apart by a round 7 to give a widened bearing, and 8 represents clips bolted to the opposite end of the strut and adapted to slide upon the side rails. The upright ladders are further secured in position by means of guy-ropes or braces, as required.

9 is a sliding jack or scaffold support adapted to support the scaifold-plank and securely its fourth side being closed by an antifrictionroller 14, journaled between the projecting ends of the yoke and adapted to roll upon the side rails of the ladder.

10 is a gravity latch or dog pivoted between the depending ears 15 on the arm 11 and provided at its lower end with a transverse handle 16, adapted to engage the side rails.

17 represents diagonal braces extending from the outer end of the arm 11 to the opposite side rails of the ladder and lapping the same slightly, and 18 is an antifriction-roller similar to the roller 14, journaled between the ends of the braces 17 and adapted to roll upon the face of the side rails opposite to that of the roller 14.

19 represents braces connecting the yoke 13 with the braces 17 to form a rigid structure.

It will thus be seen that in the operation of the device the rolls will securely hold and and the latch will automaticallylock the same.

in any of its adjusted positions. To release, all that is necessary is to pull out the latch 10 by means of the handle 16, and the support may be raised or lowered to any position.

What I claim as my invention is l. The combination with a ladder of a supporting-bracket free to slide thereon comprising an arm having a'yoke engaging said ladder, a latch carried by said arm and adapted to engage the rounds of the ladder to hold said bracket in any of its adjusted positions, braces extending from the outer end of said arm to the ladder and engaging the same and braces connecting said yoke with the aforementioned braces.

2. The combination with a ladder of a supporting-bracket free to slide thereon comprising alaterally-extending arm having a yoke embracing the ladder on three sides and projecting beyond the same, a gravity-latch carried by said arm adapted to engage the rounds of the ladder, braces extending from theouter end of said arm to the opposite side rails of the ladder and lapping the same, braces connecting the aforementioned braces with the yoke and antifriction-rolls journaled between the aforementioned braces and between the projecting ends of the yoke to engage the side rails on opposite sides substantially as described.

3. The combination with the supportingstandard of a sliding bracket or supportingbracket adjustably mounted thereon comprising a laterally-extending arm having an upturned end and a yoke at its opposite end partially encircling the standard on three sides, an antifriction-roll journaled between the ends of said yoke, a latch carried by said arm and braces extending from the outer end of said THORN COPEMAN.
