WILLIAM O. JONES, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IO E. O. JONES, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SCAFFOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,034, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed August 25, 1904. Serial No. 222,089.
enablel others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and
to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to scaffolds, and especially to that class of scaffolds adapted and designed for use upon roofs having a considerable degree of slant.
The object of my invention is to provide a scaffold especially adapted for use upon metal roofs provided with standing seams and adapted for use in supporting tools and appliances of painters and mechanics while working upon roofs.
With this and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularlypointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved scaffold as it appears on a roof with the platform thereon and showing a paint-pot in operative position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the scaffold, showing the clamping members engaging the standing seams. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the scaffold with the platform removed and with the clamping members'drawn out of engagement with the standing seams for adjustment or removal.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
In its preferred embodiment my improved scaffold consists of a frame-section 1, disposed normally horizontal and connected with a vertically-disposed frame-section 2 by a pivot 3. The vertically -disposed frame section 2 is adapted to be lengthened and shortened by means of the yoke 4, rigidly secured to the section 5 and embracing the frame-section 2. The frame-sections 2 and 5 are provided with holes 6, adapted to receive a bolt or other means of holding the two sections at a predetermined length. The ends of frame-sections land 5 opposite the pivot 3 are pivotally secured to a diagonally-disposed frame-section 7, adapted to rest upon and conform to the slant of the roof upon which the scaffold is being used. A pair of braces consisting each of the members 8 and 9 are passed through the frame-sections 7 and their extremes pivotally secured to the clamping members l0. The opposite ends of said braces are hinged together at Il, forming a toggle-joint. The toggle-joint 11 is formed upon a pintle which passes also through the slidable handle-bar l2. The bar 12 is slidably mounted within the braces 13 and 14, disposed transversely of the diagonal frame-sections 7. The upper end of the slidable bar 12 is provided with a hooked portion l5 or other convenient means for grasping the bar for operation and at its opposite and lower end is connected. to the springs 16. The springs 16 at their opposite ends are secured to the transverse brace 17 and are adapted to hold the slidable handlebar l2 normally downward. The brace-rods composed of the members 8 and 9 are adapted to be laterally lengthened and shortened by means of the yoke 18, rigidly secured to the member 9 and embracing the members 8, aud the holes 19, passing through the members 8 and 9 and adapted to receive a bolt to hold said members at a predetermined length. platform portion 20 is provided and may be rigidly secured to or removable from the scaffold.
The operation of my improved scaffold is as follows: With the parts disposed as shown in Fig. 3, the scaffold is placed upon a roof between parallel and adjacent standing seams. The handle-bar 12 is releasedand is drawn downward by the tension of the springs 16. The downward movement of the handle-bar 12 acts upon the toggle-joint 11, forcing the lclamping members 10 outwardly from the scaffold and into clamping engagement with the standing seams. Should the distance between the seams vary, the bolts in holes 19 may be withdrawn and the brace members 8 and 9 so adjusted relative to each other that the clamping members 10 will engage the standing seams with the desired degree of tension. The frame portion 1 is now adjusted to a horizontal position by withdrawing bolts from the holes 6 and adjusting the length of the frame portions 2 and 5 so that the frame portion 1 will be disposed approximately horizontal. j
It is obvious that instead of the holes 6 and 19 some form of clamping device might be substituted, the holes and bolts having been shown only because of their simplicity.
' Itis obvious that other minor changes might be made in the construction of my scaffold without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A scaffold adapted to stand between adjacent and parallel standing seams of a metal roof and clamping members adapted to engage the seams and prevent displacement of the scaold.
2. A scaffold adapted for use upon a metal roof and the like to stand between adjacent and parallel standing seams thereof, clam ping members secured adjacent to the sides of said scaffold and capable of transverse movement to engage the standing seams and a spring adapted to hold said adjustable members in an extended position and in engagement with said seams to prevent displacement of the scaffold.
3. A scaffold adapted for use upon a metal roof and the like and to stand between adjacent and parallel standing seams thereof, a pair of slidable braces extending beyond the lines of said scaffold and being hinged together within to form a toggle-joint, clamping members pivotally secured to the outer ends of said braces and adapted for transverse movement to engage the standing seams and a spring adapted to exert pressure upon the hinge of the toggle-joint to hold the clamping members in'engagement with the said seamsk to prevent displacement of the scaffold.
4. A scaffold provided with a frame comprising an upright portion, a horizontal portion and a diagonal portion adapted to bear upon and accommodate itself to the slant of a roof and the like and to stand between two adjacent and parallel standing seams thereof and provided with a pair of slidable braces extending through the diagonal sides and beyond the lines of the scaffold and being hinged together within the frame to form a toggle-joint, clamping members pivotally secured to the outer ends of said braces and adapted for transverse movement to engage the standing seams, a spring adapted to exert pressure upon the hinge of the toggle-joint to hold the clamping members in engagement with said seams to prevent displacement of the scaffold and a slidable handle member connecting the spring and toggle-joint adapted to release the clamping pressure.
In testimony whereof I afx my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
