IVILLETT IV. LAWRENCE, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters :Patent N0. 647,501, dated April 17, 1900.
Application filed January 16, 1899. `'Serial No. 702,237. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLETT W. LAW- RENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Window- Balconies 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This :invention is a device for the use of painters, decorators, and j anitors of buildings to enable them to work on the outside of a window without danger of falling.
The object of this invention is to so construct a portable window-balcony for the use above stated that it'can be quickly adj usted to any thickness of wall or window-jamb of any shape or design.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi-` cate corresponding parts in the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a window` frame having the balcony in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the balcony-frame when placed in position, the Window-sill being shown in the section.
In the drawings, c c represent Wood bars.
b and b" are movable clips which are tightened by thumb-screw b', which can be moved in either direction on wood bars c c.
c c are steel straps hinged at c', connecting Z7 with chain d, which supports foot of brace e.
e e are braces connected at b" and resting against wall of building, held rigidly in position by chain d.
7c 7c are blocks of wood resting on windowsill and screwed fast to lower half of strap c c and when in position hold lock :r rigidly to inside subsill of window-frame.
h h is a platform resting on bars o. c.
g is upright guard held in position by folding-brace f. p
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the horizontal bars a a, supporting the platform 72 h, with a brace e, made adjustable by the movable clips b and b, with a steel strap c, with a hinge c, and the lock oo, in such a manner as to make a folding portable window-balcony, adjustable to any thickness of wall and design of win dow-frame, for the use of painters, janitors, decorators or workmen, while working on the outside of windows.
2. The combination of the brace e, with the movable clips b and b, the thumb-screws Z1', b', the horizontal bar c, the steel strap c, the hinge c', the block 7o, and the chain d, which, in combination with the lock ai, furnishes a framework, adjustable, by means of movable clips b and if" to any thickness of wall, and upon which framework rests the platform 71..
