Description

H c. TRAPHAGEN.
WINDOW SCAFFQLD.
No. 181,377. Patented Aug-22,1876.
N PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D. 04
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN O. TRAPHAGEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ANNIE TRAPHAGEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WlNDOW-SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,377, dated August 22, 1876; application filed v July 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, HELEN G. .TRAJPHAGEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Scaifolds for Windows, of which the following is the specification:
This invention relates to an adjustable scaffold or portable balcony for the outside of windows, by the aid of which a person may, with perfect safety, stand on the outside of a window for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the same.
This scaflold is provided with guards on three sides, in order to insure the safety of a person standing on the platform, to which latter the guards are hinged. These guards may be folded down, and then rest on the top of the platform of the scaffold when the same is transported, making it very portable, and not liable to be broken or-damaged.
This invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure I is a side view of my improved adjustable scaffold. Fig. II is a front view, and Fig. III is a plan view, of the same.
A A are the beams, held together by crosspieces I) b, on the top of which is fastened the the floor or platform 0. To the top of the beams A A are hinged, at d d, four standards, E E E E, which are held together by slats ff. To the top of the standard E is hinged a cross-piece, G, which, by a suitable locking device, is held to the top of the standard E. This cross-piece serves to hold the side guards formed by the standards and the slats in an elevated position, as shown in Fig. I. To the under side of the beams A A are fastened the legs H H, having on their inner side notches m, fitting over the ordinary window-slab on the outside and lower part of a window-frame. To the inner ends of the beams A A, which extend over the lower part of a'window-frame into a room of a building, are adjusted the two legs N N. Each of these legs is provided with a sleeve, 0, holding it to the beam, and making it adjustable on the same. On the top of these sleeves are placed set-screws r r, by aid of which the legs are'held securely, when adjusted, to the beams. To the front and lower ends of the legs N N is held and adjusted, by set-screws s s, the cross-clamp T, which is firmly screwed against the inside and lower part of a window-frame, thus pressing the legs H H against the outside, and the clamps T against the inside, of the windowframe, and thus holding and supporting the scafiold inits place.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The cross-clamp T, legs N N, set-screws s s and r r, in combination with the beams A A and legs H H, with notches m, substantially as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed this 19th day of July, 1876.
