RUFUS W. RUSSELL, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION CAMP-KIT AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed July 1, 1916. Serial No. 107,476.
To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I. Burns W. RUSSELL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Los Angeles, iii the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Camp-Kit and Table, of which the following is a speciii cation.
My invention relates to camp kits. The principal object of the invention is to provide a kit in which various articles may be packed for the purpose of transportation, this kit being readily opened up to form a table in camp.
The invention has a spacial utility in connection with an automobile, as food, dishes, and the like may be packed therein and readily transported both on the automobile and by hand when in the Woods, the same kit being utilized to form a table in camp.
For the purpose of accomplishing the above objects certain novel structure is employed as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the camp kit arranged for transportation.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through one of the leg compartments of the camp kit.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the camp kit arranged as a table.
As illustrated in the drawings, the kit consists of a box 11 which is provided with a handle 12, this handle being arranged on what may be called the side of the box, the words, side, top and bottom, etc., as used herein referring to the box in the position as shown in Fig. 3, or in the position when used as a table.
The box arranged as shown in Fig. 1 forms a kit approximately the size 0f an ordinary suit ease, and this kit may be placed upon the running board, or on the trunk rack of an automobile, or it may be transported in various ways as will be evident from the drawing.
Secured in the box 11 near either end thereof are partitions 13, these partitions separating the central portion of the box 14 from two narrow leg compartments 15 located in either end thereof. The leg compartments 15 are each provided with a cover 16 secured to the body of the box by hinges 17, and provided with a hasp 18 by which they can be held in the closed position as shown in Fig. 1, the covers 16 hanging down in their open position as shown in Fig. 3 when the kit is used as a table. Secured at either end of each of the leg compartments l5 is an upper leg pivot 19 and a lower leg pivot 20, these pivots being located as shown in Fig. 2 at the extreme ends of the box, and one of them above the other. Pivoted on each of the pivots 19 and 20 are legs 2l, these legs consisting of two upper portions 22 which are held together at their lower end by a strap 23 which entirely en circles them. Sliding between the legs 22 is a lower movable leg 24. Secured in and passing through the leg 24 is a bolt 25 having a thumb nut 26 which operates on a washer 27 which overlaps the upper legs 22 and allows the lower leg 24 to be secured in adjustable relationship therewith in such a manner that the height of the legs can be varied to suit any irregular contour of the ground on which it is desired to set the table.
Pivoted on hinges 30 onl the upper edges of the sides of the box are two leaves 31, these leaves closing over the top of the box when arranged as shown in Fig 1, and being secured by means of catches 32 which engage pins 33 secured in the edges of the leaves 31. Sliding in the upper portion of the leg compartments 15 are slides 34, these slides being adapted when pulled out to support the leaves 3l to form shelves on either side of the kit. Extending across the top of the box is a cross bar 35, this cross bar fitting into a socketed opening 36 on either end of the box, and having lids 37 secured by hinges 38 on either side thereof. The lids 37 fold down against the partition 13 and form a flush surface with the top of the box when closed. Finger openings 39 are placed therein so that they can be readily opened. The leaves 31 and the lids 37 with the cross bar form an approximately continuous and unbroken flat surface which may be used in the Inanner of any other' table, and the central compartment 14 provides a space in which dishes of food may be stored, ready access being had to this space by lifting either of the lids 37 by means of the finger hole 39.
The method of operation of the invention is as follows:
The articles to be transported are placed in the compartment 14, the lids 37 are put in place, and the leaves 31 are folded over and secured by the catch 32. The slides 34 are pushed in until approximately flush with the outer surface of the box. The legs are folded up into place, and the covers 16 are secured by means of the hasp 18. The kit is then in the co-ndition shown in Fig. 1, and may be readily transported.
lhen it is desired to convert the kit into a table the covers 16 are released by releasing the hasps 1S, and the legs are folded down into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, these legs being adjusted to suit the height of the ground. The catch 32 is then released and the slides 34 are pulled out so that the leaves 31 are supported in the position shown in Fig. 3.
lVhile 1 have described one particular use for my invention, c'. e., its use as a camp kit, it has vario-us other uses, and may be used by commercial travelers or salesmen for the purpose of transporting and exhibiting their wares, serving in this case as a sample or selling case. All such uses are obviously within the scope of my invention, which is to be limited only by the annexed claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A camp kit comprising a box, legs on which said boxmay be supported, a pair of leaves hinged to said box in such a manner that they may be folded in to close the top of the box, a cross bar extending` across the top of said box, a pair of lids one on either side of said cross bar, said lids each being hinged to said cross bar, and adapted to close the top of said box, and means for supporting said leaves in their open position to fo-rm shelves extending outwardly from the side of the box.
2. A camp kit comprising abox, walls forming narrow leg compartments at either end ofsaid box, said compartments being open on the bottom, legs pivoted in said compartments vupon which said box is supported, a pair of leaves hinged to said box in such a manner that they may be folded in to close the top of the box, a cross bar extending across the top of said box, a lid hinged `to said cross bar and adapted to close the top of said box, and means for supporting said leaves in their open position to form shelves extending outwardly from the side of the box.
