TOOL-CABINET.
Application filed December 4, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Pnrnns and CHARLES HENRY PETERS, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and connected with tool cablnets which comprise one, or more, tiers of trays, or receptac-les, so constructed and arranged that all the receptacles forming one tier normally lie in vertical alinement one on top of the other, and are linked together to be capable of relative horizontal movement into positions where each receptacle is exposed to view.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a cabinet of the above mentioned general character which shall be-particularly adapted for use on motor or like vehicles where heavy, tools or spare parts have to be carried and it is' desirable that they should be arranged as systematically as possible and capable of being placed conveniently at hand for the user. A further object of the invention is to. provide a cabinet that can be carried conveniently by means of a handle or the like without placing all the weight of the heavy contents on one portion of the container such as the hinges and lock of a cover, and to this end the invention comprises a rigid framework consisting of a base and two uprights which support a pivoted handle between them. A tier, or tiers, of receptacles, linked to be capable of relative parallel motion have the bottom receptacle of each tier secured to the base member, which may be of the same form as one of the receptacles, and one or more receptacles of each tier is provided with a leg, or legs, each of which in the extended position of its corresponding receptacle forms a support for the tier. In order to provide for greater subdivision of the articles contained in the cabinet, the top receptacle of each tier is divided according to our invention into two parts which are linked to the receptacle below in such a manner as to move in a plane parallel to the said receptacle but in a direction at right angles to the direction of motion of the tier as a whole. If one tier of receptacles only is to be used, the framework Specification of Letters Patent.

may if desired be provided with a back in which shelves, or drawers are formed. An outer box, or Casing, is preferably provided rigidly secured to some part of the vehicle so that the cabinet can be lifted out as a whole or can be locked away in the casing without fear of damage.
In the accompanying drawings we have lllustrated our invention,
Figure 1 being a front elevational view of the tool cabinet in position in its box or case which is shown open.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. l but with the box front shown in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the tool cabinet proper removed from its box or (pase and shown in partially open position, an
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the tool cabinet shown in its fully open position.
Referring to these drawings the numeral 1 designates a box or'outer casing which may he rigidly secured to the vehicle foot board for instance, and this casing is provided with a hinged lid 2 and a hinged front or side 3 which can be opened to give access to the cabinet or chest proper.
This chest proper consists of a pair of vertical supports 4 to the upper end of which the carrying handle 5 is hinged while the lowest tier or receptacle 6 of the chest is connected to and located between the lower ends of these uprights. The various upper tiers or tool receptacles 6 6", 6 and 6 are arranged one above the other and in the closed or collapsed osition the tiers or receptacles are in alinement one with the other. The various tiers are however connected together by parallel motion or lazytong hinges or links 7 so that when pulled out sidewise by means of the handle 8 they become out of vertical alinement one with the other as shown in Fig. 3 and the contents of all the receptacles or tiers are exposed to view in step like formation. The top tier 6 is however composed of two receptacles which are hinged by parallel motion hinges or links 9 to the tier or receptacle 6 immediately below and in this case the hinges are arranged so that the two receptacles move in opposite directions one to the other and at right angles to the direction of movement of the other receptacles.
In the closedposition-shown in Figs. 1
11 attached to the walls of the containing case and thus the cabinet is held against displacement. e preferably provide, attached to the lowermost tier or receptacle 6, a vertical wall 12 provided'with shelves 13 and other fittings to accommodate certain implements and the tiers or receptacles 63,6" and 6 above the bottom one 6 will in this case'collapse or close into position against this vertical wall 12. y
In Fig. 3 the cabinet is shown, for convenience, in partially open position and it will be understood that when in the fully open'position the supporting legs 14, shown as attachedto the tier or receptacle 6. will rest upon the running board and form a firm support for the cabinet in its open position. 7
It will be seen from the foregoing that the toolchest proper can be readily removed from the containing case and carried to any desired spot and can be readily replaced again in its containing box or case.
What we claim and desire to Letters Patent is:--
- 1. A tool cabinet comprising in combination a base, uprights rigidly secured to such base, a handle associated withthe uprights, tiers of receptacles normally in alinement and connected together by linkworls' designed to give parallel motion whereby the rei'o'eptacles can be open d'out, a top receptacle divided into two parts so hinged to the receptacle beneath to becapable of being opened out in opposite directions at right angles to the direction of motiofirof a tier as a whole, and a leg attached to one 01 said receptacles, andacting as a support when the corresponding receptacle is in fully extended position. V
2. A tool cabinetas'set'forthin claim 1 secure by adapted to be housed in outer box or casing and having pins adapted to engage Slots in the Walls of the containing boX.
' 3, A tool cabinet as set forth in claim 1 and having upon one side a vertical wall provided with shelves against which vertical wall the tier collapsible receptacle folds when the cabinet'is in closed position.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
