TRUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed March 16, 1917. Serial No. 155,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trunks, the primary object of which is to construct such a device which is especially adapted for use by tourists, campers, etc., and consists of a body portion divided by a partition, forming two compartments, each provided with a cover, one of the compartments being adapted to contain various table ware and removable containers for holding food; the other compartment being arranged to receive folding legs for supporting the compartment containing the table ware and containers ofi the ground, and also to receive legs for supporting the cover in such a manner that it serves as a table.
Other objects and advantages of the present improvement will be set forth in the following description and drawings illustrating one embodiment thereof, and in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of the improved trunk showing the same opened up for use;
Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing one compartment of the trunk open and also showing the arrangement of the folding legs within it;
Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view of Fi 2' Fig. 4, is a diagrammatic view showing the construction and arrangement of the folding fieferring now to the drawings in detail, in which like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various figures, 1 represents a rectangular body portion or container, provided with covers 5 and 6, said container being divided by a horizontal partition arranged near one edge thereof and forming, with the respective covers a large compartment 3 and a smaller compartment 4. The large compartment 3 is closed by a cover 5, which is hinged to the back edge of the body portion 1, and the small compartment is closed by a cover 6 hinged to the diagonally opposite front edge of the body portion 1. The cover 1s retained in an open position when desired by means of a retaining segment 7. The cover 6 is provided with hinges 8 which are of a construction to permit the cover to be folded back until its side wall lies adjacent the front wall of the body portion 1, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The large compartment 3 is provided with a plurality of partitions 9, which divide the said compartment into various smaller compartments that are adapted to receive various articles such as food containing boxes 10, cups 11, thermos bottles 12, etc. The inside of the cover 5 is provided with a plurality of straps 13, which provide a convenient means for holding plates 14 and various table ware 15. Suitable catches 16 are provided for holding the cover 5 in a locked position.
The smaller compartment 4 is arranged to receive folding legs carried by the Walls of the said compartment and also folding legs carried by its cover 6. The legs which are attached to the walls of the smaller compartment comprise a U shaped member 17 having short inwardly bent trunnions 18, mounted in suitable bearings in oneend wall of the said compartment. Toggle levers 19 and 20 are provided, pivoted together, the other end of the lever 19 being pivotally connected to one side wall of the compartment 4, and the other end of the lever 20 pivotally fastened to one leg of the U shaped member 17. A lip 21 is provided on the upper edge of the lever 20 which is arranged to engage the lever 19 and limit the downward movement of both. An inverted U shaped member 22 has its u per bar 23 pivotally mounted in suitable hearings in the other end wall of the compartment 4. The legs of the said member 22 are joined by a tie rod 23 adjacent its ends, which are provided with members 24 forming feet. Toggle levers 25 and 26, similar to the levers 19 and 20, are pivoted together and attached to the end wall of the container 4 and also to the legs of the inverted U shaped member 22.
Attention is called to the fact that the U shaped member 17 is of a less width than the inverted U shaped member 22 so that when both are folded within the compartment 4the legs of the member 17 lie within the legs of the member 22, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. Also due to the fact that the member 17 is U shaped and the member 22 inverted U shaped, the said members will fold so as legs 27 and 28 are provided with feet 27 and 28' respectively. Toggle levers 31 and 32, similar to levers 19 and 20, are pivoted together and also pivoted to the front wall of the cover 6 and to the legs 27 and 28. Attention is called to the fact that the leg 27 is pivoted nearer the front wall of the cover 26 than the leg 28 so that when the said legs are folded up within the cover the leg 28 will lie alongside the leg 27. Suitable catches 33 are provided for holding the cover 6 closed.
Handles 34 are provided on each end wall of the body portion 1 which provide means for handling and carrying the trunk.
In using the trunk the body portion 1 is supported in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the compartment 3 on top. The catches 33 of the cover 6 are then released allowin it to swing open so that the leg members 1 and 22 may be folded down into position to engage the ground or other surface and thereby support the said body portion. The said cover 6 is then swung up until its rear wall engages the front wall of the body portion 1, at which time the legs 27 and 28 may be lowered into engagement with the ound or other surface for supporting it. n this position the cover 6 serves as a table. The cover 5 may then be opened and the desired contents removed from the compartment 3 and placed upon the table formed bythe cover 6, for the service of a meal.
I claim:
1. A trunk comprising a body portion, a partition dividing the said body portion into two compartments, a cover for each com partment, folding legs arranged within one compartment and adapted to support the body portion and folding legs 'carrled by the cover of the said compartment and arranged to support the said cover in a horizontal position.
2. A trunk comprising a body portion, A
partition dividing the said body portion into .two compartments, folding legs arranged in one of said compartments to support the body portion, and folding legs arranged within the cover of the said compartment to support the said cover in a horizontal posi tion.
3. A trunk comprising a body portion having two compartments accessible from opposite sides of the said body portion, a cover for each compartment, means for supporting the body portion and means for supporting one of said covers in .a horizontal position.
4. A trunk comprising a body portion having two compartments, a cover for each compartment, means for supporting the body portion and means for supporting one of said covers in a horizontal position, both said supporting means fitting within one of said compartments when not in use.
5. A trunk comprising a body portion, a partition dividing the said body portion horizontally into two compartments, a cover for each compartment, means for supporting the body portion, and means for supporting one of said covers in a horizontal position, both of said supporting means fitting within one of said compartments when not in use.
6. A trunk comprising a body portion, a partition dividing the said body portion horizontally into two compartments one arranged on top of the other, a cover. for each \JOSEPH BERG.
