'nncnr racnn-oovnn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JorinF. Lownnnon,
"a citi'zen of theUnited'St-ates, residing at Middleton, in the county of Hardeman and State of'Tennessee, have invented-new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Covers, of which the following" isa specification.
This invention relates-toimprovements in covers and more particularlyv to covers for receptacles such as barrels, kegs and the like. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the abovestated character wherein the cover-is detachably connectedwith the receptacle for the .pur-
pose of preserving the contents thereof when I the same isonce open-. 1
To this end use is made of a pair of prongs carried by the cover and adapted to'pene trate the body of the barrel for firmly connecting the cover thereto, and means carried by the" prong membersfor preventing thedisplacement thereof upon the openingand closing of the cover.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of foot operating means for causing the opening of the closure and avoid-i ing operating the closure by hand.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closure and its operating mechanism shown applied to a receptacle, the receptacle being illustrated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle; and
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the receptacle with the closure attached thereto.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the spur members.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the cover in open position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
A lication filed March 17, 1916. Serial No. 843879.
dependin relation thereof, and flush with the perip ieral edge thereof, is a series of spur members .9 of substantially L-shaped configurationsecured in fixed relation with respect to the section 7 of the cover, through the medium of fasteners 10. The free end of the depending portion 11 of the spurs is provided with a laterally extending tooth 12. It is obvious from the drawing, when this cover is attached to the barrel, the teeth 12 of the prongs 9 will engage with the body portion of the barrel and penetrate therein, thereby holding the cover permanently secured. to the receptacle to which :it' is applied. In order to prevent any. displacement: of the cover from the barrel and to assure of the engagement of the prongmembers with the barrel at all times, I provide a band 13 comprising a strand of-Wire 14 passing through the eyes 15 of the prong or spurs 9 and having its free terminals formed with hooked ends 16. The spring portion 17, which further constitutes the band has its outermost convolutes connected with the hooked ends of the wire 14 and the wire together with the spring 17 embraces the uper circumference of the barrel when the cover is in applied position, and the tension of the spring 17 tends to force the teeth 12 of the prongs in firm engagement with the body of the barrel and assuring against the accidental displacement thereof which would otherwise be caused by the opening and closing movements of the swinging section 8 of the cover when in use.
Secured in any preferred manner to the bottom 18 of the barrel 5 is a pair of spaced cleats 19. I employ in connection with a cover of the above stated character an improved means for operating the swinging section 8 of the cover to an open position, and to this end use is made of a foot operating crank 20 journaled in the cleats 19 and adapted to be partially rotated by the engagement of the foot with the end 21 of such crank. The opposite end of the crank 22 is formed with an eye 23 for connectingtherewith the flexible link 24. The opposite end of the link 25 is connected with the angular projection 26 fastened with the top surface of the swinging portion 8 of the closure and the flexible link passes through a guide 27, the guide 27 being fixedly secured through the medium of fastenings 28 and bent at its medial portion to form a guide eye 29, the flexible link passing through the guide eye as shown. I prefer to place guide roll 29 in. the eye. It will be seen that the projection 26 will prevent the cover from moving beyond a vertical position so that the weight of said cover when in open position will be located to one side of the pins of the hinges and thus said cover will close by gravity when the pedal is released by the foot.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising supporting members on which the barrel is placed, a crank member carried by said member, a cover composed of a stationary part, a movable part hinged to the stationary Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
part, means for rigidly and detachably hold.- ing said stationary part to a barrel, a stop on the movable part of the cover for preventing the same from moving to a vertical position, and a flexible connection from said stop to the crank on the crank member.
2. A device of the class described compris stationary part and a movable part hinged to the stationary part, a stop on the movable part for preventing the same from assuming a vertical position, a flexible member connecting said stop with the crank, spur members carried by the stationary part, a hoop member engaging with said spur members and adapted to encircle the barrel, and a spring connecting the ends of said hoop member together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
