Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O t 12 192() Application filed November 24:, 1919. Serial No. 340,163.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE TRUBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closure Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use for securing in position the closure or cover of jars or the like and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved, simple, durable, effective and efficient fastoning device of this character which may be readily applied and which embodies flexible members overlapping the closure or cover, one end of each of the membersbeing anchored and the other ends of the memhere being adapted to interlock with the other member for detachably securing the free ends of the members.
A. further object is to provide an improved device of this character adapted to serve as a handle for transporting the jar or receptacle and improved means whereby the strain upon the members caused by the weight of the supported article will tend to cause the fastening members to more securely lock the cover or closure in position, and improved means whereby the said members will be secured against relative longitudinal or slipping movement with respect. to each other.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of a jar having a fastening device secured thereto constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and also showing the fastening device in two different positions.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1 with the fastening devices secured together.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the fastening members.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a receptacle such as a jar oi the like having a closure 11 and which closure is provided in its up per face and adjacent its periphery 12 with an upwardly opening recess 13 extending thereabout. The receptacle 10 is provided with ears or lugs 14 preferably formed integral therewith and each is provided with an opening 15 therein. These ears or lugs 14 may be secured in any position upon the outer surface of the receptacle but are preferably spaced a short distance from the top of the receptacle. Y
The fasteningdevice proper consists of two flexible members 16 and as each of these members is of the same construction and configuration, the description of one will apply equally as well to them both.
The member 16 is provided at one end with a hook shaped nortion 17 having an upwardlv extending part 18, and which upwardly extending part is of a length which normally projects for a considerable distance above theupper surface of the closure 11. The member 16 is then deflected or bent downwardly as at 19 to form an upwardly extending and downwardly opening loop portion 20 and the member 16 beyond the portion 19 is then deflected upwardly to form a downwardly projecting cam shaped portion or fulcrum 21. The free end of the member 16 is shaped to form a hook 22 at theextremity thereof and the member 16 is of such a length as to project entirely across and beyond the periphery of the closure 11.
In use the members 16 are connected to the receptacle by passing the hook shaped ends 1.? through the respective openings 15 of he ears in opposite directions so that when the fastening devices are in the position shown in Fig. 1 and unlocked with respect to each other, they will stand in close proximity. The upwardly extending portions 18 of the members are of such a length that the downwardly opening loop shaped portion 20 will be spaced for some distance above the top of the closure 11 and the cam or fulcrum 21will enter the open groove 13 adjacent the periphery 12 of the closure 11. lVhen the parts are in this position and in order to fasten the members together pressure is exerted upon the free ends of the members 16 either individually or simultaneously until the hooked extremities 22 are depressed a suflicient distance that they may be projected under the downwardly opening loop 20 by shifting the members 16 laterally with respect to each other and toward each other. When the hook shaped portions 22 have passed beneath the port-ions 20 and pressure exerted the members 16 released from their pressure the natural spring of the members will cause 7 the hooks to engage under the portions 20.
V With this improved construction it will be manifest that as the free ends of the mem bers are pressed downwardly toward the closure 11 considerable pressure will be ex erted upon the portions 21 to form fulcrums for the ends of the members 16 and the I upon these fulcrums Wlll force the closure 11 against the top of'the receptacle. To release the members pressure maybe exerted upon the members adjacent 7 opening eye their free ends and preferably directly over the cam shaped portions or fulcrums 21 until the hooks are depressed out of engagement with the me'mbers, at which time the members may be shifted laterally to release the hooks. The members may then be swung out of engagement with the closure as will be understood.
Theclosurell is preferably provided with y a centrally disposed upwardly opening recess 23 directly beneath the central portions of the members 16 so as to enable the members 16 to be gripped by the hand for transporting the receptacle, and in this event the members 16 will serve as a handle.

lVhile the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of this invention.

A fastening device for covers of jars and the like embodying overlapping resilient members, apertured lugs carried by the jar, each of said members having one end shaped to form hook shaped portions each adapted to detachably engage in one of the lugs, said members adjacent the hook shaped portions being shaped to extend above the cover and being bent back upon itself to form a loop, one wall of the loop being shaped to form a cam or fulcrum adapted to rest upon the cover, the free ends of the members being shaped to form hooks to engage under the respective loops to cause the stress of the members to be exerted upon the fulcrums, the said wall of the loop and the hook cooperating to lock the members against relative shifting movement, and means permitting the said members when secured in looking relation to serve as a handle whereby the receptacle may be transported.

A fastening device for covers of jars and the like embodying overlapping resilient members, means detachably and pivotally connecting one end of each member to the jar, the free ends of said members eX- tending over the cover, hooks at the free ends of the members adapted to detachably engage the other member adjacent its point of connection with the jar, and means adj acent the point of connection of each of the members with the jar forming a fulcrum upon which the respective members are sprung to cause the members to press against the cover. a

A fastening device for covers of jars and the like embodying overlapping resilient members, means detachably and pivotally connecting one end of each member to the jar, the free ends of said members extendinq over the cover, hooks at the free ends of the members adapted to detachably engage the other member adjacent its point of connection with the jar, means adjacent the point of connection of each of the members with the jar forming a fulcrum upon which the respective members are sprung to cause the members to press against the cover, and means cooperating with the said hooks for maintaining the said members against relative slipping movements.

A fastening device for covers of jars and the like embodying overlapping resilient members, means detachably and pivotally connecting one end of each member to the jar, the free ends of said members extending over the cover, hooks at the free ends of the members adapted to detachably engage the other member adj acent'its point of connection with the jar; means adjacent the point of connection of each of the members with the jar forming a fulcrum upon which the respective members are sprung to cause the members to press against the cover, and means for holding the said members against relative longitudinal move ments.
