To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. DAHL, citizen of the United States, residing at Strandquist, inthe county of Marshall and State of Minnesota,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hatfasteners, and is particularly of the type which is positioned inside of a hat and is thereby hidden from view.

An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which maybe adjusted to'any size hat or head. 7

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character having portions thereof 7 adapted to bear against the head of the wearer in order that the hat may be held-firmly on the head of the wearer.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device including means arranged upon the outside of a hat, resembling an ordinary pin, which may be turned to adjust the fastener to difierent size heads.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which is strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient in practice.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of a full description.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1, designates a hat of-any desired style, and provided with the usualsweat band 2.

My hat fastener is secured to the inner side of the top of the hat by means of a rosette 3, by any suitable means, it is provided with a loop 4. An arcuate feather spring member 5. The slides 7 are bent at 8, as shown, to form loops in order that they may slide upon the feather spring 5. The opposite ends of the sliding members 7 are provided with a pair of perforated ears 9, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The slides are also slightly curved andwhen taken in connection with the feather spring 5, they form a semicircular structure, and each slide 7 is provided with an opening 10. The hinged sections 11, of my fastener, are provided intermediate the ends with perfo rated ears 12, as more clearly shown in Fig. l, the perforations therein being adapted to aline with the perforations in the ears 9 for the reception of pins 13 or the like, for pivotally securing the hinged sections of the lower ends of the slides 7. The upper ends. of these sections 11, are provided with threaded nuts 14, and to the lower ends thereof are secured arcuate bands 15 which are adapted to conform to the sides of the wearers head and are covered with any suitable material in order that they will not inflict pain upon the wearer.

Adapted for threaded engagement With the nuts let, upon the upper end of the pivoted sections, are the rods of the pins 16, which are provided on the inner ends with swivel attachments adapted for engagement with the openings 10, in the slide 7; and the outer ends of these pins or rods are provided with screw threads to receive heads 18, of any suitable design.

T 0 insert the fastener in a hat, the rosette 3 is secured to the inside of the top of the hat, and the slides 7 adjusted to the size and shape of the hat. The heads 18 of the pins 16 are not positioned on the pins until they have been passed through the sides of the crown of the hat. The heads are then pulled outwardly in order to swing the pivoted sections 11, so that the plates 15 engage the sweat band of the hat. By turning the pins 16 so that the nuts 14 on the pivoted sections are carried outwardly upon the pins, it will be seen that the lower ends of the pivoted sections 11 will be swung inwardly so that the arcuate bands 15 snugly engage the head of the wearer and thereby prevent the hat from becoming disengaged with the wearers head.

It will be recognized that this fastener may be secured to hats of various styles and heights since the members 11, 7, and 5, are constructed from feather spring and the members 7, may slide up upon the member 5, so that the fastener may be accommodated in a hat having a lower crown.

It is understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having described my invention I claim:

1. A hat fastener comprising an adjustable member secured within a hat, a pair of sections pivoted thereto for engagement with opposite sides of a wearers head, and means for swinging said sections into engagement with the weai ers head.

2. A hat fastener comprising an adjustable member securedwithin a hat, a pair of sections pivoted thereto for engagement with opposite sides of a wearers head, and a pair of threaded rods for threaded engagement with the pivoted sections, each having one end supported by said adjustable memher and the opposite ends passing through the hat.

3. A hat fastener comprising an adjustable member secured to the inside of a hat, a pair of slides mounted thereon for adjusting the fasteners to hat crowns of various heights, a pair of sections pivoted to said slide, arcuate members secured to the lower ends of the pivoted sections, and means engaging the pivoted sections for forcing the arcuate members into engagement with opposite sides of the wearers head.

A hat fastener comprising a depending arcuate spring member secured to the crown of a hat intermediate the ends of the spring member and having its free ends bent to form stops, a pair of resilient arcuate slides having their upper ends bent to embrace said free ends of said spring member for slidably mounting the slides upon said memher, a depending section pivotally secured to the lower end of each slide, and means for swinging the sections so that the lower ends thereof engage with opposite sides of a wearers head.
