IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION HAT- -BRIMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,614, dated July 8, 1873; application filed March 29, 1873.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, I. YGNACIO CASSIANO, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Extension Hat-Brim, of which the following is a specification:

For an extension sun-shade attachment to hat-brims, to be extended for use or folded back at will, I propose to have a wide annular piece of cloth, having an India-rubber cord in the outer edge, sewed to the outer edge of the ordinary brim, and stationary arms projecting from a supporting-ring at the base of the crown under the ordinary brim to the edge, with branched extension arms pivoted to them, so as to swing outward and engage with socket-clips on the flexible cord to extend the brim; and these clips, with which the extension arms connect detachably, engage with hooks at the base of the crown, when the extension brim is folded back under the principal brim, to hold it up close to the under side of the latter; at the same time the Indiarubber cord-draws or shirs the edge of the reversed extension brim around the opening of the crown in a manner to dispose it complete ly and neatly when it is not required to have it extended.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat with an extension brim extended. Fig. 2 is a plan of the under side of the hat with the brim extended. Fig. 3 is partly a plan view of the under side of the hat with the brim folded, and partly a horizontal section. Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2 taken on the line a; m. Fig. 5 is a detail of the brim in section, enlarged to show the arrangement of the socket-clips with the extension arms, the cloth, and the elastic cord and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the under side of a section of the extended brim and the ring on which the stationary arms are supported.

A is the crown, and B the brim, of a hat of any approved kind adapted for the applicathey have the branched extension arms E pivoted to them, so as to extend as far as the width of the extension brim when swung outward, and so as to swing back within the pe riphery of the brim B and the crown of the hat, as represented in Fig. 3. J is the annular ring of cloth for the extension brim. It is sewed onto the outer edge of the permanent brim at T, and is attached at the outer edge to an elastic India-rubber cord, K, by clips L, consisting of a thin metal plate bent around the cord and lapped at the ends, between which the edge of the cloth is fitted and secured by stitches, as shown at M. These clips also have asocket, N, by which the outer ends of the extension arms are connected when the brim is extended, so that the said extension arms can hold the brim in the extended condition. 0 represents little hooks attached to the permanent arms near the crown of the hat for the connection of these clips to hold the extension brim when it is folded up, the connection being made by hooking the sockets on the points of the hooks.

The tension of the extension cloth and the elastic cord keep the clips on the ends of the branched folding-arms, and hold the arms from swinging back; but they ofl'er but little resistance to the detachment of the clips by stretching them outward to pull them ofl' the ends of the braces, or the same operation when they are put on the braces.

The operations by which the brim is ex tended and folded will be clearly understood by inspection of Figs. 2 and 3, in which it is represented extended and folded.

3. The combination of the elastic cord K with the extension brim and the clips L, sub stantially as specified.

4. The combination of the hooks O with the clips L, elastic cord, and the extension brim, substantially as specified.
