HAT SECURING DEVICE Filed April 20, 1936 INVENTOR. JU/l/V LOCHNER ATZ'ORNEY. g
Patented Apr. 12, 1938 UNITED STATES HAT SECURING DEVICE John Lochner,
Application April 20,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to Wearing apparel and more particularly to means for securing hats in position on the heads ofindividuals.
An object of the invention is to provide an effective device for retaining hats in adjusted position irrespective of wind conditions and inadvertent shocks received by the hats.
A further feature is in the provision of means for adjusting the operative length of the chin, strap used to retain the hat and for readily attaching and removing the securing means.
Another purpose is to combine with the device means to protect the ears from cold, frost bites etc. as may be required. 7
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:-
Figure l is a front'elevational view of one form of the device illustrating its application.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on lines 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of another form having combined therewith an ear mull.
Figure 7 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 8 is another side elevational view of the same showing the ear muff turned and foldedas when not in use.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing in greater detail, the device is shown to consist of a pair of thin, narrow, strap-like pieces of metal forming connectors I5, bent at their upper ends to produce hooks I6 adapted to engage the edge of a sweat band of a conventional type of hat.
Then the lower ends of the connectors are slots ll, through which are passed the bights of loops It, preferably of flexible, elastic, tape-like material, one of the ends of which are secured to a slidable buckle i 9 by which the length of the tapes may be adjusted.
The opposite ends of the tapes are formed into loops H in one of which is engageda metal eye 22 and in the other a member provided with a knob 23 engageable in the eye, and obviously detachable at will, this device constituting a chin strap by which a hat or the like may be secured in its adjusted position.
In the modified form, shown in Figures 4 and 5,-
New York, N. Y.
1936, Serial No. 75,396
a connector 25 is bent to produce a hook 26 at its upper end and formed at its lower end to constitute a forked hinge element 21, operative between mating members 28 and held therein by a pintle 29.
The elements 28 are engaged by a wire loop 36, shaped to fit circumjacently the ear of a wearer, this loop being provided with a smooth, soft covering M, as rubber, a spring 32 encircles the pintle 29, between the forks 21, and acts to normally retain the loop in downwardly extended position.
The remaining Figures 6, 7 and 8 show a similar connector 35 having a hook 36 and a flange 31 held by a pivot 38 to a corresponding flange 39 on an intermediate member 40, forked at its lower end shaped to produce hinge elements 4! engaged by a pintle 42 with corresponding hinge elements 43 on a loop member 44 covered by a rubber casing 45.
'This casing has attached to it a fabric covering 46 constituting an ear muff.
Due to the pivot 38, the member 40, hinge 52 and loop 44, may be reversed in position, relative to the connection stems 35, to present the element 46 in either of two positions, and also, by reason of the hinge, the element may be extended downwardly, raised substantially upright, or at an angle, as shown in Figure 8.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat commodious hat retainer has been describedin two of its approved forms and that an ear muff can readily be applied, said muff being foldableinto either an operative or inoperative position.
Having thus described this invention and set forth the manner of its construction and use, what is claimed as new and sought to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device to secure hats in adjusted position, comprising a pair of flat outturned hooks to engage the interior of the sweatband in'the hat on opposite sides, single thin fiat stems on said hooks to extend downwardly therefrom below the brim of the hat, hinges on the free ends of said stems, loops to engage the ears of the wearer of the hat, said loops connected by said hinges to said stems, springs combined with said hinges tonormally retain said loops substantially upright snugly against the interior of the hat when in raised position and permit swaying when in lowered position and pivoted connections on which said loops may be reversed in position relative to said stems.
