To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES\J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Cedar Rapids, county of Linn, State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas burners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision in a gas burner of means for preventing the flame from being blown out by the pressure of the gas in passing through the same. i
Another object of the invention is the provision of a burner having a bell shaped nozzle or an enlarged end so constructed as to create a vacuum thereby preventing the pressure of the gas from blowing outthe flame after the latter has been ignited.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a mixing tube to be used in connection with gas burners, so as to provide a vacuum where gas may be burned under pressure, so that thepoint of ignition is directly at the end of the mixing tube instead of at a distance from the end of the mixing tube, thereby preventing the force of the gas and air from blowing the flame out. The mixing tube can be used with any kind of gas, whether kerosene gas, gasolene gas, Blau gas, natural gas, acetylene gas, or manufactured coal or water gas of any kind.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a burner such as above referred to which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in View the present invention'rcsides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ing forming a part of the present application and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a burner constructed in accordance with the present invention parts thereof not having direct bearing on the invention being shown in elevation; and
Fig. 2 is an end view of the bell shaped or enlarged nozzle.
Referring now to the accompanying drawknown type or ing by corresponding characters of refer- 7 once throughout the several views, the numeral 5 shows in dot and dash lines a' gas supply pipe to which is attached a sleeve 6 which supports a casing which carries the valve of the burner and the gas regulating parts.
As the same however can be of any well construction they are not to be particularly referred to in this detail description but are simply indicatedbroadly by the numeral 8.
A sleeve 9 is secured in any preferred manner to the casing 7 and has side arms 10 projecting forwardly therefrom to support the mixing chamber 11.- This chamber 11 is of tubular formation having its inner end flared as shown at 12 adjacent the gas Valve and regulating mechanism 8 to insure the discharge of air and gas into the said tube 11.
The outer end of this tube or chamber 11 is externally screw threaded as shown at 13 and has threaded thereon a bell shaped nozzle 14, the purpose'being to create a partial vacuum in this end of the device as the air and gas pass therethrough.
A suitable pilot burner 15 can be extended if a pilot burner is desired to be used, into this enlarged end nozzle 14 and connects its opposite end to the before mentioned sleeve 6 by means of a relatively small supply pipe 16.
In use the gas is turned to permit the ignition of the pilot burner 15. The flow of gas to the burner is allowed by the hand lever 17 which controls the valve not shown and the thumb screw 18 which controls the gas regulator.
The flow of gas into the tube 11 draws in a suificient quantity of air through the bell shaped end 12. This air and gas mixes thoroughly within the chamber 11 passing out through the bell shaped or expanded end nozzle 14 creating therein a partial vacuum which prevents the flow of gas from blowing out, and the pilot 15 causes the ignition of the air and gas mixture within the bell shaped or expanded end nozzle 14 permitting a flame to be discharged therefrom which can be duly regulated by the mechanismabove referred to.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing i; will be'manifest that a gas burner is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in th s connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas burner such as described, the combination of a casing, a mixing chamber supported therefrom, a bell shaped extension provided at one end thereof, a bell shaped nozzle secured to the opposite end thereof, a pilot burner contained therein and means for supplying gas to said pilot burner.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing having gas regu lating means therein, a mixing chamber extending from the casing and adapted to receive the gas discharged from the gas regulating means, a bell shaped extension adja cent said casing for supplying air to be mixed with the gas in said mixing, chamber,
a bell shaped nozzle mounted upon said mixing chamber, a pilot burner disposed there in, and means for supplying gas to said pilot burner.
8. In a burnerof the character described, the combination of a casing, a gas supply pipe connected therewith, a sleeve secured to said casing, gas regulating means provided in said casing, arms extending from five cents each,
said sleeve, a tubular mixing chamber supported by said arms for receiving gas supplied by the gas controlling means of the casing, a bell shaped nozzle adjacent the casing from which the gas is discharged and into which air is drawn by the passage of gas into said mixing chamber, the opposite end of the mixing chamber having external screw threads provided thereon, a bell shaped nozzle threaded upon the end of said mixing chamber, a pilot burner located in said bell shaped nozzle, and a pilot supply pipe extending from the pilot burner to the casing substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
l. in a burner of the character described, the combination of a casing, a gas supply pipe connected therewith, a sleeve secured to said casing; means for regulating the supply of gas; arms extending from said sleeve; a tubular mixing chamber supported by said arms for receiving gas supplied by the gas controlling means of the casing; a bell shaped chamber adjacent the easing into which the gas is discharged, and into which air is drawn by the passage of gas into said mixing chamber, the opposite end of the mixing chamber having a bell shaped, expanded, enlarged nozzle for the purposes heretofore stated.
