To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I. Lno M. HENNEssY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to oil burners adapted for the consumption of crude oil and other heavy hydro-carbons in connection with a jet or spray of compressed air, and it has for its object to produce a simple and eflicient device of this class in which the quantity of air supplied to the jet or flame may be easily and efficiently regulated.
With this and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
f In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an oil burner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of a portion of the burner.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved burner comprises a coneshaped barrel 1 having inner and outer concentric walls 2, 3 between which is formed a vaporizing chamber 4. The outer wall 3 is provided at the bottom thereof with threaded apertures 5. and 6 for the reception, respectively, of an oil supply pipe 7 and a cap .8, which latter may be removed for the purpose of affording access to the vaporizing chamber for cleaning purposes. The coneshaped barrel 1 has a rearwardly extending cylindrical flange 9 in the lower portion of which an ignition opening 10 is formed.
11 designates an air supply tube having an externally threaded flange 12 which is in threaded engagement with the rear end of the flange 9 of the barrel 1, said flange 9 being of a larger internal diameter-than the external diameter of the tube 11. The forward end of said tube, which extends into the Hange 9, in the direction of the barrel 1, is threaded for the reception of a cap 13 having an annular gear 14 which through an aperture 15 in the flange 9 engages a pinion 16 upon a shaft 17 suitably supported for rotation, as by means of a lug 18 upon the air pipe 11 and having a hand Wheel 19 whereby it may be rotated for the purpose of effecting adjustment of the cap 13.
Associated with the air pipe is a U-shaped pipe 20 having forwardly extending arms 2l and 22 which are disposed, respectively, outside and inside the air pipe. The external arm or branch 21 is connected by a pipe or duct 23 having a valve 24 with a pipe 25 extending from the vaporizing chamber 4, a coupling 26 being utilized to eect t-he desired connection. The branch 22 of the U- shaped pipe 20 extends forwardly within the air pipe 11, being disposed axially and concentrically with reference to said air pipe, and the forward end of said pipe branch 22 is equipped with a cone-shaped nozzle 27. The cap 13 is provided with a central conical aperture 28 affording la seat for the conical nozzle 27.
A pipe or duct 29 having a valve 30 connects the air pipe 11 with the vaporizing chamber 4.
In operation, the supply of oil through the pipe 7 may be regulated in any suit-able well known manner. The air plpe 11 is connected with a suitable source of supply of compressed air which may be maintained under the desired degree of pressure, and air under pressure is admitted through the .valved duct 29 to the vaporizing chamber where it becomes impregnated with the hydro-carbon admitted through the pipe 7. The carbureted air may now be permitted to pass through the valved pipe 23 to the nozzle 27 on issuing through which it is ignited by means of a torch or igniter introduced through the opening 10. As the barrel l becomes heated, the oil contained in the vaporizing chamber becomes vaporized, the vapor being mixed with the heated air to produce a highly inflammable gas. When the device becomes sufficiently heated, the cap 13 is rotated to produce a space between the nozzle 27 and the annular seat 28 through which air under pressure will be forced into the flame issuing through the nozzle, thereby promoting combustion and greatly increasing the intensity of the heat. The valves 24, 30 and the cap 13 may be readily adjusted, according to the existing conditions to produce the most satisfactory results.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
' 1. An annular casing constituting 'a vaporizing chamber, an air supply' pipe supported in concentric relation thereto,'a duct .associated with the air supply pipe and having a valved branch connected with the vaporizing chamber and a Second branch ex-V tending in a forward direction concentrically within said air pipe and carrying 4a cone-shaped nozzle, a cap' having threaded engagement with the air pipe and provided with an aperture affording a seat for the cone-shaped nozzle, and means for adjusting the threaded'cap upon the air supply Plpe" 2. A cone-shaped barrel having inner and outer walls and a space between said walls constituting an annular vaporizingchamber having an air inlet and means for regulating the admission of air therethrough, a valved duct for conveying mixture from the .chamber and including 'a vnozzle for discharging said mixture axially through the barrel, a compressed air pipe surrounding the nozzle, and means associated with said pipe and adjust-able with reference to the nozzle and cooperating therewith to form an annular passage for a jet of compressed air issuing adjacent to and surroundlng the nozzle.
3.. In a. device of the character described, a conical barrel constituting an annular vaporizing chamber and having a rearwardly extending ilange, an air pipe provided with a' collar having threaded engagement with said flange to support said air pipe within and in spaced relation to the flange, a duct' associated with the air pipe and having eX- ternal and internal branches, the. external branch being connected with the vaporizing chamber and provided with a regulating valve, and the internal branch being supported axially within the air pipe and provided with a conical nozzle, a cap having threaded engagement with the air pipe and provided with an aperture affording a seat for the conical nozzle, means for adjusting l the threaded cap, a valved duct connecting the air pipe with' the vaporizing chamber, and means for supplying hydro-carbon'to said chamber. v
