VACUUM-FEED OIL BURNER.
Application led July 18, 1925.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements 1n oil burners and more particularly to a vacuum feed oil burner,the
primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character for burning crude oil which is so constructed as to superheat the oil prior to its delivery to the burner nozzle and thus provide a means for burning absolutely all of the -oil and requiring a less quantity of the oil to produce an amount of heat ordinarily requiring a greater amount of oil.
A still further object resides in providing a device of this character which is con- 4structed to cause a vacuum feed for the oil whereby the oil reservoir may be in a plane below the horizontal plane of the burner ro er.
A still further object resides in providing a device of this character which is construct ed to control the amount of oil fed under the force of the. vacuum to the burner and further provided with means for controlling the amount of steam fed to the device.
Another object resides in providing a device of this character in which' substantiallyY all of the oil will be made combustible, thus eliminating the loss 'of various drops of oil which ordinarily takes place at the burner ti Iii still further object resides in providing a devicewhich is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture,
and one which will be very useful in opera .With these and other objects in view, my invention consistsin the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application,-
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a burner constructed in accordance with my invention 5 and Fi re 2 is a horizontal section as seen on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding' parts throughout theseveral views, and in ,which 1 represents a specially constructed pipe section having formed intermediate of its ends a spherical portion 2, the latter forming therewithin a steam chamber designated by Serial No. 44,540.

'lhe portion adjoining the spherical section 2 is enlarged and forms a flange 4 which is adapted to be removably bolted as shown at 5 to a similarly shaped anged portion 6 formed on a second pipe section 7. The latter pipe section is also formed with a spherical section 8 which pro vides therewithin an oil chamber 9. It Will thus be seen that the section 1 may be said to be a steam section whereas the section 7 may be said to be an oil section of the device.
Formed integral with the spherical section 2 is an upstand-ing tubular section 10 which connects by means of a union nut 11 to a steam pipe 12, the latter being provided with a chamber 13 in which is provided a control valve 14, operated by the handle member 15.
The flanged portion 6 of the section 7 is internally threaded and engaged with an enlarged threaded p-ortion 16 formed intermediate the ends of a hollow stem 17. The one end of the hollow stem has connected or formed thereon a solid stem portion 18 which projects through the one end of the pipe section 1 and carries thereon a handle member 19. A packing 20 is applied to the end of the section 1 around the stem 18 and a nut 21 holds the packing in place. A packing 22 is applied to the flange 4 around the hollow stem 17 for obvious purposes.
The hollow stem 17 is provided With openings 23 which are ordinarily disposed within l -I the chamber 3 so as to receive therethrough steam from the steam pipe 12 whereby the same may be carried through the hollow stem 17 and ejected from its jet 24.`
Formed integral with the spherical section 8 of the pipe section 7 is a depending tubular portion 25 similar to the tubular portion 10 on the section 1 and the same is removably secured to an oil' pipe 26 through the medium of a union nut 27. Connected with the pipe 26 .is a valve chamber 28 in which is properly supported a valve 29 carried on a st-em 30, the latter being operated by means of a handle 31. This oil pipe is adapted for connection with an oil reservoir (not shown) which obviously is disposed in a plane below the horizontal plane of the pipe sections 1 and 7 Mounted in the outer end portion of the pipe section 7 a short distance within the free end thereof is a tapering throat portion 32, the same being threaded in place and threaded into engagement with the extreme -end of said pipe section 7 is a delivery pipe is adapted to enter the openings 23 and pass through the hollow stem 17 to be ejected.

Oil is adapted to be withdrawn from the reservoir through the valve chamber 28 by operation of the valve 29 and said oil being drawn upwardly through the pipe is adapted to enter the oil chamber 9 where it will be superheated by contact with the hollow stem 17 through which steam is pa'ss' ing. The steam entering the throat meniber causes a vacuum thereby drawing the oil upwardly through the pipe 26 and drawing said oil through the annular space surrounding the jet 24 will cause the oil. to-be drawn through the throat member 32. The steam and oil drawn through the throat member are adapted to be mixed at the inner end of the delivery pipe 33 and a portion of the latter which I have designated by the numeral 3G and which forconvenience will be termed a mixing chamber. The steam and oil will be directed through the delivery pipe 33 to the burner tip or nozzle 34 and out through the outlet 35 where it will be ignited. As the oil is superheated in the chamber 9 it will be broken up into a line spray and thus subshzntially all of the oil may be ignited at the burner Without loss of the oil. The amount of` oil directed through the throat 32 may be controlled by the adjustment of the jet 24 with respect to said throat through the medium of the handle member 19 and of course, the ow of oil may be further adjusted byadjusting the valve 29 by the handle member 31. The How of steam may be adjusted through the device by means of the handle member 15 controlling the valve 14. A very light flame may be produced by reducing the amount of Dil which flows to the burner.
Frein the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions setforth it will be obvious that Various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without de'parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A suction oil burner comprising a body member having a globular oil chamber and angularly disposed inlet and outlet pipe portions communicating with the chamber,the outlet. pipe portion being of greater internal diameter than the corresponding diameter ot' the inlet pipe portion and less than the internal diameter of the chamber, a reducing throat member mounted in the outlet pipe portion and spaced beyond the inner wall of the chamber, a hollow stem passing diametrically through the chamber and having an end portion entering the outlet pipe portion andspaced from the inner surface thereof, said stem being movable longitudinally with relation to the throat member and having its end extremity located between the inner end of the throat member and the inner wall surface of the chamber and means for admitting ste-.im into the stem.
