Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL H. PEAKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Blowpipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In gas burning blow pipes, it is found that the intensity of' the heat developed, is in direct proportion to the velocity of the air and the volume of gas consumed.
The object of this invention is to provide a blow pipe construction which is such that a very high air pressure may be used, a large consumption of gas per unit of time, secured, and perfect combustion maintained, insuring a regulable, concentrated and intensely hot flame.
To these ends the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the head or burnerend of a blow pipe embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inlet end of the same; said Figs. l and 2 together forming a complete sectional view of the device; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. l; and Fig. l, a transverse section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
Air under pressure is supplied from any suitable source, through a supply pipe 1 having a .suitable valve 2 for regulating the flow, and gas is supplied through a supply 3 which is also provided with a suitable valve 4c for regulating the flow. These supply pipes are screwthreaded to engage screwthreaded openings in a suitable couling or casing 5 which is formed with a wall 6 extending across the passage within which the air pipe 1 is secured. This wall is formed with a screwthreaded opening to receive a small jet tube 7 which extends outward through the discharge end of the coupling 5 in the axis thereof and in the axis of a mixing tube or pipe 8 which is screwthreaded at one end to engage the screwthreaded discharge end 9 of the coupling. The opposite end of the tube 8 is screwthreaded to engage a screwthreaded opening in the end of a burner head 10, and the The burner head is preferably cylindrical in form and provided with an axial passage 1l extending therethrough and forming a continuation of the mixing tube, said passage being preferably contracted slightly toward its open discharge end 12. An annular chamber 13 is formed in the head around the passage 11 and this chamber communicates with the passage 11 through a series of openings 14; formed in the wall of the passage. The end wall 15 ofthe chamber 13 is formed with a plurality of small openings 16 arranged around the main discharge end 12 of the main passage so that gas entering the chamber 13 through the openings 14, may pass out through the openings 16 and form a plurality of small jet flames around the main jet issuing from the opening 12.
By arranging the air jet in the mixing tube with its discharge end at some distance from the burner head, the air issuing from the jet tube is thoroughly mixed in the tube 8 with a large percentage of gas which is dra-Wn in around the tube 7 by the force of the jet of air. The burner head is thus provided with a combustible mixture of` gas and air, some of which will be driven by the air pressure, laterally intothe annular chamber 13 and maintain a series of small jet flames around the main et. A very high air pressure may therefore be used, as the iiame of the main jet will be maintained by the small jets around it, and the higher the air pressure, the more gas will be forced through the small jet openings. The pressure of the gas in the chamber 13 will be much lower than the pressure in the passage 11, but it will be sufficient at all times to cause the gas to issue from the openings 16 and form an auxiliary supply for the main flame. A large volume vof gas is thus supplied to the main jet, 'iving a very hot flame which is maintaine an( concentrated by the very high air pressure.
Obviously, changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts withtion and I do not wish to limit myself to the particularform or construction shown.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. In a blow pipe, the combination with a mixing tube having a coupling at one end thereof for airv and gas connections, and a jet tube carried by the coupling of said mixing tube and extending longitudinally along said mixing tube, of a burner head carried by the opposite end of said mixing tube and comprising a member having a longitudinal tapering passage with the walls of said passage representing a continuation of the inner walls of said mixing tube, said member having circumferentially arranged openings ladjacent to the end of said mixing tube, a peripheral flange carried by the outer end of said member and rovided with circumferentially arranged ibng'tudinal openings, and a sleeve mounted upon said member and the flange thereof vand providinof an annular chamber between the outer walls of said member and the inner walls of said sleeve.
2. In a blow pipe, the combination with a mixing tube having a coupling at oneend thereof for air and gas connections, of a burner head at the opposite end of said mixing tube, a jet tube carried by the coupling of said mixing tube and extending in proximity to said burner head and providing a mixing chamber at said head, said burner head comprising a member having a longi- `tudinal tapering passage with the walls. of said passage representing a continuation of the walls of'said mixing chamber, said member having circumferentially arranged openings adjacent to the end of said mixing tube and in communication with the mixin chamber thereof, a peripheral flange carrie by the outer end of said member and provided with eircumferentially arranged longitudinal openings, and a sleeve mounted upon said member and the flange thereof and providin an annular chamber between the outer wal s of said member and the inner walls of saidsleeve.
