JOHN BRENING, JR., OF MCOOOK, NEBRASKA.
OIL-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patet No. 772,496, dated october 1s, 1904. Application iled May 23, 1904. Serial No. 209,329. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oIIN BRENING, J r.,`a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Cook, in the county of Redwillovv and yState of Nebraskahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full,'cle'ar, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
This invention relates to oil-burners ofV that type specially adapted for use in connection' v with steam-boilers and in which the fuel-oil employed is vapor-ized and injected with steam into the lire-box of the furnace and there consumed to generate steam.
The object of the invention is to provide a burner of this character-which is efficient for use on steam-boilers of different types and which embodies certainl improved features of construction and combinations of parts, as
` hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1is a sectional view through a portion of a boiler equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the burner `on an enlarged scale, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are similar views of interchangeable injector nozzlesv adapting the device for use in connection with different types of boilers.
Referring now more particularly to the at a point between its ends and receiving the threaded end ofv an oil-supply pipe 7, leading from the tank 3, said pipe being provided with a controlling-valve 8', whereby the How of oil to the burner may be regulated.
Extending longitudinally Within land through the tubular body or casing 5 is a steam-nozzle 9, which is provided at one end with a tapering point 10 to eject the steam in a jet to commingle with the oil and spray it into the fire-box 1. The opposite end of the nozzle 9 is externally screw-threaded,as shown at 11, for connection with a coupling 12, connecting the same with one end of a steamsupply pipe 13, leading from the steam-dome 2 of the boiler.
The outer end of the body or casing 5 of threads 14 for connection with a coupling 15, which has a threaded portion 16 to engage the threads 14, an outer sleeve 17, and an intermediate polygonal portion 18, the latter projecting beyond 4said sleeve and adapted for Vthe application of a wrench, by means of which the coupling may be conveniently connected to and disconnected from the body or casing 5. The inner face of the polygonal vportion may be provided with a suitable wheel or other suitable form of grip 24, as
will be readily understood. Themovement of this hand-wheel in one direction or the other will adjust the nozzle 9 longitudinally to regulate the jet action of the tip 10.
The inner end of the tubular body or casing 5 is provided with internal screw-threads 26 to receive a coupling upon the end of an injectornozzle of suitable construction. In the drawings I have shown three different forms of interchangeable nozzles which adapt the device for use upon different types of boilers and boilers of different capacities. The nozzle 26 (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3) is ,designed for small boilers and ordinary stationary boilers and comprises a tapering body portion 27, having at its inner end a screw-threaded coupling' 28 to engage the said threads 25 and provided at a` point in advance of said coupling with a polygonalportion 29 to adapt it to be conveniently applied and removed. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the nozzle 26' is the burner is provided with internal screw- IOO detachably fitted upon the end otl an independent coupling-pipe 30, which is provided with a threaded end 28 and polygonal portion 29, similar to the corresponding part-s o'tl the nozzle 26. The detachable connection in this case is made by forming the nozzle with a cylindrical end 31, fitting upon a reduced portion 32 of the coupling and secured thereto by screws or like fastening devices 33; but any other desired form of connection may be employed. rlhe nozzle 26' further differs from the nozzle 26 in form and size, being made of truste-conical shape or bell shape to project the hydrocarbon vapor and iiames over a greater area in the tire-box of the boiler. This type ot' nozzle is especially adapted for use in connection with boilers having ordinary straight lines. The nozzle 26 and coupling shown in Fig. correspond to those shown in Fig. 4, except that the nozzle is disk-shaped and has a greater ilare to project the vapor and flames over a still wider area. This construction is employed when the burner is applied to boilers of the return-Hue type, thus preventing a back action of the products of combustion.
In the operation of the device the controlling-valves in the oil and steam pipes are opened, and the oil flows through the pipes 7 into the casing 5 and is drawn upward into the injector-nozzle by the suction produced by the steam escaping from the tip 10 ot' the steam-nozzle 9, the jet ot' steam escaping from the tip lO further causing the oil to be projected into the lire-box l in the form of spray, which being thereby commingled with the steam is placed in condition for complete combustion. By adjusting' the hand-wheel the steam-nozzle 9 may be moved longitudinally to set the tip l() at different points with relation to the nozzle 26, thus regulating the effect of the blast and the suction action of the oil.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings` the construction and operation oi the invention will be readily understood without re quil-ing a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the torm, proportion,
and the minor details ot construction may be L resorted to without departing trom the principle or sacrilieing any oi the :ulvantages oi this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters latent, isw
l. In an oil-burner, the combination with a casing provided at one end with a discharge,- nozzle, ot' a source ot' oil-supply communicating with the easing, an adjustable steam-injector disposed within the easing and having a threaded surface, means tor supplying steam thereto, a coupling upon the end ot the casing opposite the nozzle, ay nut engaging the steam-nozzle, and adjusting means conneetml to the nut and revolnbly connected with the coupling, substantially as described.
2. In an oil-lnirner, the combination with a casing provided at one end with a d isehargenozzle, of a source of oil-supply communieating' with the lasing, a steam-injector having a nozzle and disposed within the casing, said injector having a threaded surface, a sleeve on the casing, a hand-nut having a tubular portion entering the sleeve, a coupling connccted to the sleeve and to the casing, and means whereby said hand-nut may be rotated independently ot the coupling to adjust the injector relatively to the discharge-nozzle ot the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence ot' two subscribing wit` nesses.
