Description

CHARLES J. (ELEMENTS.
Improvement in Post-Office Box-Fronts.
Patented June18, 1872.
rrnn STATES PATENT Qrnro.
CHARLES J. CLEMENTS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR'TO' HIMSELF AND EDVVIIN P. FOWLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-OFFlCE-BOX- FRONTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,116, dated J une 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. GLEMENTs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Office Letter-Boxes and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that class of postoffice boxes generally known as lock-boxes; and consists in the construction and arrangement of the door and lock casing to the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of the box-frame and door, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same through line :0 m. J
Arepresents the metal box-frame. B is the metal door hinged to the frame A. The flange 1), preferably at the bottom,is formed with one or more lugs, a, bent at about right angles, so as to leave a space between them and the body of the door sufficient to receive a pane, i, of glass or other transparent material, which will allow the interior of the box to be seen from the outside; or a plate with the number of the box may be placed on said lugs, which thus support and hold such plate or pane. An opening is, of course, formed in the door for said pane or plate, which may be provided with scroll or net work for better security and ornamentation. The casings or sides of the lock are formed on the inner side of the door B, and the lock, of whatever construction it may be, covered on the inner side by a cap or plate, D. At the lower edge of the cap or place D is a flange, g, from which project, at or about right angles, one or more, lugs or arms, h h, so that when said plate is in position said lugs or arms will extend over a portion of the pane or plate "i, thereby snugly confining the same in position.
Should by any accident the pane i become broken, it can readily be removed and another substituted by merely removing the cap or plate D.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the door B having flange b and lugs c, the cap or plate D having flange g and lugs h, and the plate 2', all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
