SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters Patent No. 652,349, dated June 26, 1900. Application filed November 9, 1899. Serial No. 736,410. (No model.)

To (LZZ whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM I. CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharpsville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Windew-Guard and Shelf; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Theinvention relates toacombined windowguard and shelf, and more particularly to a device which may be used for the purpose of protecting the display-windows of business houses and also which may be converted into a shelf for supporting articles to be displayed on the outside of the window.

The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and to provide a device of this character which may be easily operated and which when used for either of its purposes will be complete and effective.

To these ends the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of part which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an illustration of my invention, showing it used as a window-guard. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the invention arranged as' a display-shelf.

In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

1 denotes a store-window provided with guide-rods 2, which are secured to the window-stiles near their upper end.

3 denotes shelves, which may be formed of any suitable material, that shown being preferred, and consisting of Wire-nettingsecured within rectangular frames 4. These shelves have their inner edges removablyhinged to the stiles of the window, one above the other.

5 denotes links, the upper hooked ends of which are engaged with rings 6, that slide upon the guide-rods.

7 denotes angular brackets secured to the outer corners of the upper shelf. To these brackets are hooked the lower ends of the links. 8 denotes links, the upper hooked ends of which are connected to the said brackets and the lower ends of which are connected to brackets 9.

10 denotes a hasp secured to the inner edge of one shelf, and 11 denotes a staple secured to the outer edge of the other shelf and adapted to be engaged by the hasp when the shelves are raised to the position shown in Fig. 1.

l3 denotes a padlock to engage the staple and lock the shelves in the position shown in Fig. 1.

If desired, the front edge of each shelf may be provided with hooks 14: for supporting articles.

By referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that when the shelves are in a raised position theyserve as an efiective guard and when lowered into the position shown in Fig. 2 serve as shelves, upon which may be supported the dilferent articles to be eX- hibited. The positions of the shelves may be easily and quickly changed.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.

It is apparent that my invention is simple, may be made at small cost, and is Well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed, and it will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, .and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with the guide-rods adapted to be secured to the stiles of a window; of shelves adapted to have their inner edges hinged to said stiles, links connecting the shelves one with the other, and links connecting one of said shelves with the guiderods, and fastening means for securing said shelves edge to edge parallel with the window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
