To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LGHAnLns T. RAsoi-ucn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Pad-Holders and Ticket-Punches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined pad holders and ticket punches, and has for its cspecial object to provide mean whereby pads of tickets in tablet or loose. form and regardless of number or thickness may be properly positioned and so retained in the holder as to be ready at hand when needed.

More particularly the invention is designed for use in connection with holders and punches such as are fully described and claimed in my co-pending application entitle-d Combination pad holder and ticket punch filed in the United States Patent Oiiice May 8, 1916, Serial Number 96,263.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth. and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawings. Figure 1 is a side view of the invention showing a number of tickets held thereby; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal verti cal section through the device: Fig. 3 is a plan view; and Fig. 4: is an end view.

Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawing, the reference character A represents a base of any suitable material and here shown as rectangular in shape, though it will of course be understood that any other preferred shape or configuration may be resorted to if desired. Along each of its longitudinal edges. the base is provided with upstanding flanges B, which for a portion of their length and at their corresponding ends are of considerably greater height as shown at 10 than throughout their remaining portion as shown at 11. A transverse flange 12 is formed at one extremity of the base and connects with the reduced ends of the flanges, said transverse flange being cut away intermediate its length as at 13, and the adjacent portion of the base being likewise removed to form a convenient means for readily grasping tickets C or like devices placed upon the base.

Adjacent its ends remote from the trans verse flange 12 and between 'the flanges 10,

the base has secured thereto an upwardly extending abutment. or stop member 14 against which the ends of the tickets C are designed to rest. If desired this stop member may be formed by stamping from the basc and bending such stai'nped portion into vertical position at right angles to the plane of the base.

Secured upon the outer face of one of the flanges 10 is a pocket 15 having an open m iper end adapted to be. closed bv means of a portion 16 of the head of a T-sl'iaped plate, the stem 18 of the. said plate being of such width as to span the distance between and rest upon the upper edges of the flanges 10 and being formed adjacent its free end with a pair of spaced downwardly projecting ears 19 journaled or pivoted on the bar 20 extending transversely between the flanges 10 and above the base.

A second or follower plate 21 rectangular in shape. and of a width slightly less than the distance between the flanges 10 is provided with depending lugs 22 adjacent one end journaled on the shaft 20, while at its remote end the plate 21 is provided with teeth adapted to engage and hold a pad or a number or loose tickets in position upon the base. A coiled tension spring 24-, having one end secured in a flange 10 is disposed about the shaft. 20 and has its other end. bearing against the underface of the plate 21, so as to force the toothed end thereof downwardly upon the tickets as shown in Fig. 2. A leaf spring 25 having its end secured. respectively, upon the upper face of the plate 21. and the lower face of the stem 18 of the T plate serves to normally hold. the latter plate down upon the upper edges of the flanges 10 and in closing position over the open upper end of the pocket 15.

As the number of loose tickets or the thickness of the pad of tickets to be held by the base may vary, it will be apparent that the provision of the follower plate 21 materially enlarges the field of utility of the dc vice, the spring 24 maintaining the toothed end of the plate forcibly down upon the face of the uppermost. ticket, so as to hold. the tickets therebelow in proper position. The tendency of the spring 25 is to normally hold the T plate closed over the upper edges of the flanges 10 and the open end of the pocket 15 as above suggested. By grasping the rear end of the stem of the T plate and the corresponding end of the base between the fingers and forcing them together,it will be understood that a resultant loosening and removal of the teeth 23 andof the two plates from their normal positions may be ac -om plished.

This invention also contemplates the use of a spring plunger member D, such as that fully described in my co-pending application above referred to, the punch 26 of which cooperates with .an aperture 27 in the head portion l6of the T plate to remove clippings from the edge of tickets inserted thercbetween, said clippings falling intothe pocket, so as to avoid littering up ofthe lunch or other room or placewhere the device may be used. It also contemplates stamping from the base a portion which is bent to form a flange 28 having an aperture therein by means of which the device may be readily carried about the person of the user.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to .have it understood that the construction shown isonly illustrative and that the invention can be carried. out by other means and applied to uses other thanv those above set forth within the scope of the following claims. Y

-Having described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a deviceof the character described, in combination, a casing comprising a base having. flanges on its longitudinal edges adapted to hold a set of leaves, a follower plate journaled between said flanges above said. base for engaging and retaining said.

2. In a device of the character described, in con'ibination, acasing comprising a base having flanges on its longitudinal edges adapted to hold a set ofleaves, a follower plate journ aled between said flanges above said base for engaging, and retaining. said leaves thereupon, a second plate journaled between said flanges, and means interposed between saidiplates. for normally holding said second plate in closing position.

3. A device of the character described, comprising, in combina-tion, a. base having flanges on its longitudinal edges adapted to hold a set of leaves, a pocket having an open end secured to one of said flanges, a plate pivotally mounted between said flanges and having a portion for covering the open end of said pocket, a follower plate journaled between said flanges for engagingand retaining said leaves thereupon, and means for maintaining said follower plate insecuring position upon said leaves.

4:. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising, in combination, a: base having flanges on its longitudinal edges adapted to hold a. set of leaves, a plate pivotally mountedbetw-eon said flanges, a follower plate journaled between said flanges for engaging and retaining. said leaves thereupon, and spring means for maintaining said follower plate in securingposition upon said leaves.
