To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAROELLUS E. RoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cow-Tail Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to clamps of that kind which are adapted to be adjusted on the tail of a cow to prevent switching of the tail while the cow is being milked.

The invention has for its object to produce a clamp of this character of simple and eflicient construction which may be conveniently manipulated by one hand of the operator for the purpose of adjusting or detaching said clamp.

A further object of the invention is to produce a spring actuated clamp of the character described in which the actuating spring or springs constitute the handle whereby the device may be held and manipulated.

lVith these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspec tive view, showing the device detached and compressed in readiness to be applied. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4: is a sectlonal View taken on the line 44 in Fig. 3.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The improved clamp comprises jaws 1 which may be constructed of sheet metal, said jaws consisting of rectangular plates which are bent or curved to present an arcuate contour in cross section. The plates 1 are provided with struck up lugs or keepers 2 for the passage of the ends of the actuating springs S upon which said jaw plates are mounted. A. plurality of such springs is used, and for purposes of illustration two have been shown. Each of said springs is formed of a piece of resilient wire by bending the same so as to form at the middle portion thereof a spring coil 3 from which arms 4 extend, said arms being curved in the direction of each other and crossed, as indicatedat 6, from which point the said arms are reversely curved, as indicated at 7, the curves 7 being formed to correspond with the cross sectional contour of the jaw plates 1. The curved portions 7 of the spring arms are fitted in the keepers 2 of the j aw plates, and the said curved portions 7 may be provided with terminal hooks 8 engaging the edges of the jaw plates which will thereby be held against displacement. Fastening means, such as solder, indicated at 9, may be used to additionally secure the jaw plates against displacement on the springs.

The curved portions or arms 4 of the actuating springs S are connected in series by means of handle plates 10, one such plate being mounted on each side of the device, and said plates being in the present instance connected terminally with the spring arms by bending the plates so as to envelop said arms.

It will be seen that the operator by grasping that portion of the device which includes the arms 4 of the actuating springs and the plates 10, and compressing the spring arms by bearing on the plates, will force the jaw plates apart, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, thus enabling the device to be adjusted on the tail of a cow, as seen in Fig. l.

The device is obviously to be made of such dimensions that the jaw plates will include between them a sufiicient number of the joints or sections of the cows tail to prevent the latter from being switched while the operation of milking is in progress.

The device, as will be seen, is of exceedingly simple and efiicient construction, readily applied and detached and of such a nature as to inflict no pain or unnecessary discomfort upon the animal.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A cow tail holder comprising jaw plates of arcuate contour in cross section, said plates being of dimensions to engage an extended portion of the tail and actuating springs having coils and reversely curved arms extending therefrom, the outermost curved portions of the spring arms being.

secured eXteriorly on the jaw plates.

2. A cow tail holder comprising jaw plates of arcuate contour in cross section, said plates being of dimensions to engage an extended portion of the tail and actuating springs having coils and. reversely curved arms extending therefrom, the outermost curved portions of the spring arms being secured eXteriorly on the jaw plates; and plates whereby the arms of the springs nearest the spring coils are connected in vertical series.

3. A cow tail holder comprising jaw plates of arcuate' contour in cross section,

said jaw plates being provided with struck up keepers, and actuating springs having coils disposed midway between their ends, and reversely curved arms extending from said coils and crossing each other, the outermost curved portions of said arms being engaged with the keepers of the jaw plates and provided with terminal hooks engaging the edges of said plates.
