Re .1t known that l, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n the city of `Newark, in the county of Essex and State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pad Holders or Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, Aand exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it `pertains to make, construct, and use thc same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters of refer'- ence marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

",lhis invention has for its object to provide a pad holder or case adapted for the reception of small pads. My improved pad holder or case is of such form that it is well adapted for advertising purposes, in that the advertisements may be placed or embossed in any suitable manner on the back and the lid thereof, and the case is of such convenient and attractive form as to render it desirable to be retained permanently by the nser, and to be refilled by the pad as often as the same becomes exhausted; or the case may bev used, owing to its novel con struction, to-conta-in stamps, visiting or busi nesscards, railroad tickets, change or the like.

A further object of my invention is to provide a pad holder or case, provided with a spring-actuated intermediate plate, hingedly connected to the back portion of the case and the lid thereof, in such a .manner that the contents of said case will, by means of said intermediate spring actuated plate, be firmly held in said case by the spring pressure exerted by said intermediate plate, and at the same time, permit the ready removal or withdrawal of cards or the like, from the case when the lid thereof is open. The employment of the spring-actuated intermediate plate serves to frictionally hold one end of the pad, preferably the stub end thereof, or one end of the cards, so that when the lid is opened, the cards or pad cannot become accidentally displaced from said case, by reason of said plate, but a single card or a single leaf of the pad can be removed therefrom, without disturbing the remainder of the cards or the pad.

llfhe body of the case comprises a back portion a, the top of which is provided with tubular bearings 5 0, and the longitudinal edges of which are provided with upwardly extending iianges c-c. 'llo one of the upwardly-eXtending flanges c, a tubular pencil-receiving element d is secured in any suitable or convenient manner. rlgFhe lid e ofthe case at its upper edge, is also provided with tubular bearings corre spending to the tubular bearings bformed `onthe top of the back portion a, the purposes of which will be hereinafter described, and the lower portion of the lid is provided with a downwardly-extending flange g, which when the lid e is in closed position, preferably abuts against the inner face of the back portion a, as clearly indi cated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby formi ng a closed compartment.

'llhe lid e, on the inside thereof, and eX- tending inwardly from the longitudinal edges thereof, is provided with preferably integral inwardly-extending channels t-J'z., providing holding or receiving means for advertising matter, railroad tickets, a mirror or the like.

Secured to the tubular bearings 5 4; of the back portion ct, and to the tubular bear ings )Q f of the lid e, is an intermediate plate z', one longitudinal edge of which is provided with tubular bearings y'-j, and the other longitudinal edge being provided with the tubular bearings j'-j, similar to the tubular bearings formed on the back portion a and lid e.

The plate z', by means of the tubular bearlill] a Y A ings j-y', is hingedly connected to the tubular bearings b-b of the back portion a, by means of a pintle k, and also hingedly connected to the lid c by means of the tubular bearings y"j, which are hingedly connected to the tubular bearings f-f of the lid e by means of a pintle Z.

Surrounding the pintle 7c is a spiral springv m, one end of Which bears against the back portion a, and the other end of which bears againstthe plate z, which spring tends to keep the plate c' in engagement with the memorandum pad n. A similar spring o surrounds the pintle Z, one end of which bears againstthe plate i and the other end of which bears against the lid c, which will tend to keep the lid e in its closed position.

The stub of the pad fn, is held in position on the back portion a of the ease by the spring-actuated plate z', by means of the spring m, and the lid e is normally held in closed engagement with the ease by means of Y the spring o.

The parts are of such shape as to lend themselves readily to manufacture by the use of suitable unches and dies from ordinary sheet meta The spiral spring m normally tends to prevent the plate i from being raised aWay from the stub 0f the pad or a number of cards, so thatany cards or the pad contained in the ease, are frictionally held in the case by said plate z', but by applying pressure to thelid c, the plate z' Will be causedto swing about the pintle Ic, thereby freeing it from the cards or the stub of the pad, in order that the same may be replaced or removed from the case.

Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly elflcient one, and While the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not care to restrict myself to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed, I consider Within the scope and terms of my claims.

I claim:

l. A pad holder or case comprising a back portion, the top of which is provided with an integral upturned bearing, and the longitudinal edges of which are provided with upwardly-extending flanges, a springactuated lid, provided at one end With tubular bearings and at its opposite end with a flange, designed to engage With the said back portion, and a spring-actuated intermediate plate having integral bearings, hingedly connected to the bearings of the back portion and the spring-actuated lid.

2. A pad holder or case comprising a back portion, the top of which is provided With an integral upturned bearing, and the longitudinal edges of which are provided With upwardly-extending flanges, a spring-actuated lid provided at one end with an integral bearing and receiving channels formed along the longitudinal edges thereof, the lower portion of the lid being provided With a downwardly-extending flange adapted to abut against the back portion, and a springactuated intermediate plate having integral bearings, hingedly connected to the bearings p the back portion and the spring-actuated This specification signed and witnessed this 30th day of September, 1916.
