WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 17, 1917. Serial No. 207,428.
fication.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the class that are operable by screw action."
The object of my invention is to provide a wrench of the `class described that is eiiicient, durable, simple in construction and one that by reason of its novel construction has increased strength.
With this and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a plan view of said wrench, Fig. 2 is a side view of the wrench,
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the movable jaw, and
Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the said movable jaw. j
Like parts are referred to by like reference characters throughout the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail the character a denotes a stationary or fixed jaw projecting from a stock or head a having the handle c integral therewith. Said fixed jawy a is grooved as particularly shown in Fig. l and is provided with the guideways Z and Z2 for the travel of the movable jaw b. The said guideways may extend at any suitable angle to the handle c.
The movablejaw Z) slides in said guideways Z and Z2 toward and from the fixed jaw a to adjust the-space between the jaws to fit the nut orvbolt head to be operated upon. f
In the*l main body of the wrench, or the head a', I provide two parallel transverse grooves or openings as before said, Z and Z2. I connect these grooves by cutting the narrow parallel transverse channel or bearing ZS through the dividing web. I also provide a second parallel transyerse channel or bearing Z4 directly above said upper transverse groove Z, by which construction I am enabled to provide for a lateral movement of the movable jaw Z) which has depending therefrom a portion shaped for a sliding fit in the said transverse grooves Z and Z2.
The purpose of the said grooves being double and the correspondingly shaped portion of the movable jaw b is to provide a very strong and yet freely sliding connection between the stock a and the adjustable Vjaw Z) and also to supply means for moving said jaw laterally by action of thescrew g.
A slot or opening L preferably rectangular in form is provided through the `face of the head a', as shown in Fig. 1. in which is positioned a nurled member or roller Z which is' interiorly threaded to engage the exterior threads of said adjusting screw g, providing means to operate said screw g and thereby the movable jaw Z9 by revolving the nurled roller Z with the thumb and linger of the hand holding the wrench.
The lower part of the movable jaw b is cut away for a part of its length, as illustrated particularly in Fig. 3, to permit of its movement over the nurled member Z to the extent of the widest separation of the jaws, the remaining portion of the lower part of said movable jawv Z) forming the tapped nut through which the screw g operates to move the jaw to any desired position.
The said nurled member d, positioned as aforesaid, allows the screw g to be passed through it up to the head thereof and is secured against turning upon the said screw by means of a pin or set-screw, herein illustrated as a pin f.
By this construction the screw is protected within the body of the wrench against any injury that would impair its free movement by the ngers at all times. 'Ihe nut e can be positioned either ahead or behind the thumb nut d. In the accompanying drawings it is shown ahead. If placed behind the thumb nut oZ then the lower portion of said movable jaw b is cut away for a part of its length on the opposite end to that hereinbefore described and as shown in the drawings.
By reason of the novel construction of my said wrench as just described it has as much strength when the jaws thereof are opened to their maximum extent as when but partially opened. The wrenches of this class new in use are byreason of their construc- Ilaterrteol` J une 25, MMS.
handle o. However, any suitable Jform ofv handle may be used with my device.
Various modilications in the construction f of my improved wrench may be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
`In a wrench, the combination with a head provided with a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw and parallel transverse grooves in which said adjustable jaw is adapted to fit slidingly and to travel yto and fro therethrough, of a parallel transverse channel provided directly above the upper groove, a parallel transverse channel cut through the dividing web of said grooves, said channels forming duplicate bearings for said adjustable jaw, an adjusting screw, an aperture in the iace of said head in which is positioned a nurled member interiorly threaded to engage the exterior threads of said adjusting screw, the lower portion of said adjustable jaw being cut away for a part of its length to permit of its movement over said nurled member to the extent of the widest separation of the jaws, the remaining portion of the lower part of said jaw forming a tapped nut through which the said adjusting screw operatesto move said jaw to any desired position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
