UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE PLANTE, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED PIPE WRENCH AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,0'70, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed March 24, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PLANTE, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined Pipe Wrench and Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved pipe wrench and cutter, which is simple and durable in construction and arranged for conveniently turning a pipe or rapidly cutting the same in two parts.
The invention consists of ahandle carrying afixed toothed jaw and an angularj aw, and an arm pivoted on the said handle and carrying a cutter to operate in conjunction with the said angular jaw and also formed with a movable jaw to operate in conjunction with the fixed toothed jaw.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafterdescribed, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. t
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same with parts in sections, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The improved pipe wrench and cutter is provided with a handle A formed with the curved end B on the front edge of which is secured a toothed jaw O, and on the inner edge of which is fastened an annular jaw D provided on its faces with V-shaped ridges D, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The angular jaw D operates in conjunction with a cutter E located directly opposite the jaw D and journaled in an extension F of an arm F pivoted at G to the end B of the handle A, the said arm F being provided with a fixed jaw H operating in conjunction with the toothed jaw O.
A screw I screws in an offset J formed on the handle A, the inner end of the said screw abutting on the extension F of the arm F so as to impart a swinging motion to the latter on screwing up the screw I. The latter is provided at its lower end with a handle K for Serial No. 467.499. (No model.)
conveniently turning the said screw I to adjust the cutter E relative to the fixed angular jaw D or the curved jaw H relative to the toothed curved jaw C.
When the device is to be used as a pipewrench, the arm F is swung outward on its pivot G in the direction of the arrow at so as to permit of passing the tool with. the jaw 0 lease the pipe sufficiently to prevent turning of the same, and on the further forward movement of the handle A the pipe is again turned.
When it is desired to cut the pipe in two parts, the screw I is screwed down sufficiently to permit of swinging the arm F in the inverse direction of the arrow at to permit of entering the pipe between the cutter E and the angular jaw D. When the pipe is placed between the two, then the screw I is screwed up until the V-shapedcutter E engages with its cutting edge, the pipe periphery at one side, the opposite side being engaged by the ridges D of the angular jaw D. The operator then manipulates the handle A in the usual manner by swinging the same around the pipe so that the cutter E cuts an annular groove in the pipe. The operator continues screwing up the screw I so as to move the cutter E toward the jawD to deepen the cut, until finally the pipe is completely cut in two on the further manipulation of the handle A, as above described.
It will be seen that this device is very simple and durable in construction, and can be readily utilized for turning a pipe or for cutting the same in two parts, it being understood that in either case the screw I is essential, as the same serves as a stop for the arm F in turning the pipe and also as a means for moving the cutter E toward the jaw D to deepen the cut in the pipe.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the handle A is formed with a tapering aperture A for enabling the operator to use this end of the handle as a wrench on plug nuts of a size corresponding to the size of the pipe for which the wrench is designed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pipe wrench and cutter comprising a handle carrying a fixed toothed jaw on one edge and an auxiliary jaw on the opposite edge, and an arm pivoted on the said handle and carrying a cutter to operate in conjunction with the said auxiliary jaw, and a curved jaw to operate in conjunction with the fixed toothed jaw, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pipe wrench and cutter comprising a handle carryingafixed toothed jaw on its outer edge and an angular jaw on its inner edge, an arm pivoted on the said handle and carrying a cutter to operatein conjunction with the said angular jaw, a curved jaw to operate in conjunction with the fixed toothed jaw, and a screw screwing in the said handle and engaging an extension of the said arm, substantially as shown and described.
3. A pipe wrench and cutter comprising a handle formed with a curved end, a toothed jaw secured to the outer edge thereof, an angular jaw secured to the inner edge of the said end and provided with V-shaped ridges, an arm pivoted on the said handle end and provided with an extension and a curved jaw, which latter operates in conjunction with the said toothed jaw, and a cutter journaled in the said extension of the said arm and operating in conjunction with the said angular jaw, substantially as shown and described. I
4. A pipe wrench and cutter comprising a handle formed with a curved end, a toothed jaw secured to the outer edge thereof, an angular jaw secured to the inner edge of the said end and provided with V-shaped ridges, an arm pivoted on the said handle end and provided with an extension, and a curved jaw which latter operates in conjunction with the said toothed jaw, a cutter journaled in the said extension of the said arm and operating in conjunction with the said angular jaw, and a screw screwing in the said handle to engage the said extension, substantially as shown and described.
