IMPROVEMENT IN BOWS FOR ARCHERY.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 126,734, dated May 14, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Bow for Archery, invented by EPHRAIM S. MORTON, of Plymouth, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts.
Figure l represents my improved bow in two elevations, partly sectioned; and Fig. 2 is also partly a side elevation and partly a section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The said bow consists4 of a straight, turned, or otherwise-formed central piece, A, ot' strong wood, and two springs, B, of steel wire, one attached to each end of the central piece in the manner shown, or in any equivalent way, being inserted at one end in a hole of the central piece, so as to be taken outl readily, and are held -in by the string. These springs are coiled at C, near the ends of the center piece, to give greater elasticity; and beyond the coils they are curved suitably to constitute the bow, and they are made either double or single. In this example they are double. The said coils 'are turned in opposite directions to each other when made single, so that being on opposite ends ofthe center piece the parts ofthe bows beyond the coils are thereby diverted from the axial line of the center, both on the saine side,
and thus hold the string in the plane of the side of the center on which the arrow lies, and thus greater accuracy in the flight of the arrow is secured.
The object of having the springs connected to the center detachably is that they may be taken out and packed in a box more compactly than they otherwise could be. 'These steel springs are far better than any other substance for bows, and being combined with the center piece constitute a better bow than those made wholly of flat steel, for it can be held in the hand better, while all the elasticity of the tlat bow is obtained by the coils, or more, if re-V quired, and being detachably connected facilitate the packing of them compactly, the sprin gs being taken out.
Having thus described my invention, I clairn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an article of manufacture, a bow formed of wooden middle A, and 'sprin gs B G fastened on each side thereof, as described.
EPHRAIM S. MORTON.
